  2. MEANING • MASSAGE IS ONE OF THE OLDEST FORMS OFTREARMENT FOR HUMAN ILLS. • MASSAGE IS NOT A NEW CONCEPT. • MASSAGE IS A PROCEDURE WHICH IS USUALLY DONE WITH THE HANDS, SUCH AS FRICTION, KNEADING, MANIPULATION, ROLLING ETC ON EXTERNAL TISSUES OF THE BODY.

  4. MASSAGE HELPS:- • TO SUPPLY OXYGEN TO MUSCLES. • TO REMOVE WASTE PRODUCTS. • TO PREPARE AN ATHLETE FOR COMPETITION. • TO SUPPORT TRAINING PROGRAMME.

  5. PRINCIPLES OF MASSAGE • DURATION OF THE MASSAGE WILL VARY ACCORDING TO THE AREA. • IT SHOULD NOT BE LIMITED TO THE INJURED AREA ONLY. • UNIFORM RATE SHOULD BE ESTABLISHED FOR ALL MOVEMENTS. • MASSAGE MOVEMENTS SHOULD BE SLOW, GENTLE AND RYTHMICAL • MASSAGE SHOULD BE ACCORDING TO THE AGE.

  6. THE TYPE OF THE MASSAGE MOVEMENT WILL DEPEND ON THE PATHOLOGY OF THE TISSUES. IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THERAPIST HAVE GOOD SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE OF MASSAGE. THE FREQUENCY OF THE APPLICATION WILL DEPEND UPON THE CONDITION THAT IS TO BE TREATED.

  7. GUIDELINES FOR MASSAGE MASSAGE SHOULD BE RYTHMIC. HANDS SHOULD BE ALWAYS IN CONTACT WITH BODY. SHOULD NOT APPLY FORCE BUT BODY WEIGHT CAN BE USED TO APPLY PRESSURE. SHOULD NOT TALK TOO MUCH DURING MASSAGE. SHOULD BE FULLY RELAXED WHILE GIVING MASSAGE. BREATHING SHOULD BE DEEP AND SLOW.

  8. TYPES OF MASSAGE STROKING:-IT IS DIRECTED TOWARDS THE HEART .AIDING BLOOD FLOWAND THE LYMPETHETIC SYSTEM.

  9. FRICTION THIS MASSAGE IS BEST DONE WITH FOUR FINGERS, BUT CAN BE DONE WITH JUST THE THUMB OR THE PALM OF THE HANDS.

  10. HACKING:-THIS IS DONE WITH THE OUTER EDGE OF THE HANDS.IT CAN BE DONE HARD OR SOFT.

  11. PETRISSAGE IT IS PROGRESSIVE PICKING UP AND ROLLING PRESSURE MOVEMENTS AS ONE PUSHES WITH ONE HAND AND PULLS WITH OTHER HAND.

  12. ROLLING IT IS LIKE A LIGHT PINCH GLIDING ALONG THE SKIN SURFACE WITHOUT BREAKING CONTACT. IT IS GOOD FOR SMALL GROUP MUSCLES

  13. TAPPING IT CAN BE DONE WITH THE TIP OF THE FINGERS

  14. PRESSURE PRESSURE THERAPY IS TO PERFORM ON SPECIFIC AREAS OF THE BODY.

  16. EFFECTS OF MASSAGE ON SKIN • MASSAGE INCREASES THE TEMPERATURE OF SKIN. • MASSAGE PRODUCE S A DIRECT EFFECT ON THE SUPERFICIAL LAYERS OF THE EPIDERMIS. • IT IMPROVES BLOOD CIRCULATION,THAT IMPROVES THE FUNCTIONING OF SWEAT GLANDS. • MASSAGE OPENS THE PORES OF SKIN AND SKIN BECOMES SOFT.

  17. EFFECTS OF MASSAGE ON NERVOUS SYSTEM • MASSAGE PRODUCES LITTLE CHANGES IN THE NERVE ITSELF. • IT RELIEVES CERTAIN TYPES OF PAINS. • IT EFFECTS THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM AND ALSO THE SENSORY NERVES. • IT EFFECTS THE REFLEX CONTROL OF CIRCULATION.

  18. EFFECTS OF MASSAGE ON CIRCULATION OF BLOOD • IT INCREASES THE CIRCULATION. • THE RATE OF HEART BEAT ALSO INCREASES. • MORE CAPILLARIES ARE OPEN WITH INCREASE RATE OF HEART. • THE RED BLOOD CEELS COUNT INCREASES AFTER MASSAGE. • MASSAGE INCREASES OXYGEN CARRYING CAPACITY OF THE BLOOD.

  19. EFFECTS OF MASSAGE ON MUSCLES. • MASSAGE PRODUCESAN ACTUAL INCREASE IN THE SIZE OF THE MUSCLES STRUCTURE. • THE MUSCLES BECOMES FIRMER AND MORE ELASTIC. • MUSCLES STRENGTHENED AND GROW BY MASSAGE. • IT RELAXES THE MUSCLES.
