  3. Structure of EU Funding Schemes • Current R&D funding programme: FP7 (2007-2013) • Successor: Horizon 2020 (2014-2020) • FP7 is organized around 4 categories: • COOPERATION • IDEAS http://erc.europa.eu/ • PEOPLE http://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/ • CAPACITIES

Call for Proposals vs. Open Scheme • Most EU funding is available via Call for Proposals (CfP), only a small number are open schemes • CfP are published online and can be accessed through the Research Participant Portal: http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/ • CfP/ Project life-cycle • Publication 2. Submit proposal within deadline (usually ~6 months) 3. Evaluation 4. Selection 5. Negotiation 6. Implementation 7. Review

Access to EU Funding • Principles of access to EU funding • All areas of FP7 open to the participation of ASEAN researchers and/or research organisations • Most ASEAN countries are 'International Cooperation Partner Country' (ICPC) except Singapore and Brunei (‘industrialised countries’, receive funding only in exceptional cases) • International dimension: General & targeted Opening of Calls • 1. General Opening: Activities open to international cooperation • 2. Targeted Opening (A) : Activities with a focus on international cooperation, including but not restricted to ASEAN countries • 3. Targeted Opening (B) : Activities with a focus on international cooperation specifically targeting ASEAN countries

Opportunities for ASEAN Countries • How can I participate? • As a public or private entity as part of an international cooperative project through the COOPERATION and CAPACITIES programmes • As a single research group under the IDEAS programme • As an individual researcher in the PEOPLE programme • Most promising topical areas • Health • FAB (Food, Agriculture and Biotechnology) • Energy • Environment (one call specifically targeted for ASEAN: ENV.2013.6.5-4 Knowledge platforms, networking and uptake of research results for more strategic international R&I cooperation)
