How are we doing? • According to the 2009 “Program for International Student Assessment,” (PISA) U.S. students placed: 14th in reading 17th in science 25th in math • Fewer than 1/3 of U.S. 8th graders proficient in mathematics 1/5 4th graders and 1/3 8th graders can not perform basic computations Credit: U.S. Department of Education; NEA

  5. Engineering in Undergraduate • About 6% of US undergraduates major in engineering (2nd lowest in developed countries) Europe- 12% Singapore- 20% China – 40%

  6. Specialized Areas of Concern • 80 percent of kids drop out because they cannot pass algebra • Read and understand specialized text 1/12:1/50

  7. STEM and Gender 9.5% vs. 4.1% in middle school
