I want you just to imaging for a second and organisation where staff; • Want to come into work • Feel valued and are rewarded for their achievements • Get real job satisfaction • Have good health and enjoy their lives • Where patients have nothing but good things to say about the service they get • Just a pipe dream??

  4. What is it? “Health and Wellbeing is about being emotionally healthy as well as physically healthy. It’s feeling able to cope with normal stresses, and living a fulfilled life. It can be affected by things like worries about money, work, your home, the people around you and the environment you live in. Your wellbeing is also affected by whether or not you feel in control of your life, feeling involved with people and communities and feelings of anxiety and isolation.” Source: National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) 10

Why is it important to us? • Total budget for our Hospital £130m • £102m spent on pay • We are a ‘people’ industry • What are we here for ?? • H+WB not just about reducing levels of sickness (we are one of the lowest in the region) • Strong evidence points towards levels of stress/wellbeing of staff and organisational performance* • Huge financial pressures at the moment – need to keep the workforce fit and able to meet these challenges *Staff Perception Research: Quantitative Research, RAND Europe, The Work Foundation and Aston Business School and/or Benefit Evaluation Model, The Work Foundation and Aston Business School

How we are addressing H+WB for staff • Health, Happy, Safe • Health & Wellbeing is embedded in the NHS Constitution • What does a Healthy Happy Safe workforce do? • Motivated with high morale (staff survey – improved on last year) • Employee retention and lower employee turnover (turnover under 10%) • Reduced sickness absence (3.6%) • Fewer incidents, risks and complaints (NHSLA level 3) • Good employee/management relations (staff survey)

  9. KPI’s linked to these behaviours • Board approval and Exec Director sponsor • H+WB Board • Action plan put in place • Obesity • Weight watchers • Discounts at local fitness clubs • Healthy options in Restaurant • Stress • Policy • OH advice and counselling support • ASSET

Fit for 2012 • Linked to the start of the Olympic Games • ‘Be inspired’ Health logo • 250 members of staff (across the Trust) sign up • Three assessments across the next twelve months • Pledge to climb Mt Everest, Swim Channel etc • H+WB Board to support staff to achieve their goal • Brave but right thing to do
