  1. What are progressives? • Hint: Look at the word. • People who wanted to improve the government and make life better. • Roosevelt and his supporters were called progressives

  3. The Square Deal • Started by Roosevelt • Goal = to give people fair treatment • Set up commissions – Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906, Meat Inspection Act • Broke up monopolies (John D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil Company)

  4. Conservation • What’s that? (It was one of your vocabulary words…) • It’s a way to protect the environment by keeping natural resources from being wasted or destroyed. • Roosevelt set aside millions of acres of land for parks!

  5. Robert La Follette • Governor of Wisconsin • Stopped favoritism by giving tests • Workday couldn’t exceed ten hours • Listed jobs that children could not be hired for • State would pay workers who got hurt on the job By 1918, 20 states copied the “Wisconsin Idea”

  6. William Tweed • Best known political boss • Ran NYC for years robbing millions of $$$ • Progressives said city governments should make up commissions

  7. What about the prejudices against African Americans? • W.E.B. Du Bois – 1909 formed the NAACP • What’s that? • National Association for the Advancement of Colored People

  8. What about the children? • 1914 – almost every state passed laws that made it illegal to hire children below a certain age • Did it work? • Sort of…no federal law yet

  9. Prohibition…What’s that? • Plan to stop people from drinking alcoholic beverages • 1919 – 18th Amendment passed making production, sell, and transportation illegal • Did it work? • Nah, people still found ways! • 1931 – 21st Amendment repealed the 18th
