  1. Locating The Lord’s Church “Government of the Lord’s Church”

  2. Government of the Lord’s Church • As stated in earlier lesson, Jesus is the head. "But you, do not be called ‘Rabbi’; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren. Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ." (Matthew 23:8-10, NKJV) "And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in allthings He may have the preeminence." (Colossians 1:18, NKJV) "And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth." (Matthew 28:18, NKJV)

  3. Yes! No! Government of the Lord’s Church • Remember all saved ones everywhere are a part of the one body.

  4. Government of the Lord’s Church • The body universal has “no” leadership structure other than to have Christ as its head. • The local church has elders which oversee the flock. The Local Church ????????????????????? Elders Elders Elders Elders

  5. Government of the Lord’s Church • Elders oversee the local church "From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church." (Acts 20:17, NKJV) "Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly;" (1 Peter 5:2, NKJV) "Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood." (Acts 20:28, NKJV)

  6. Government of the Lord’s Church "So when they had appointed elders in every church, and prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed." (Acts 14:23, NKJV) • Elders oversee the local church.

  7. Government of the Lord’s Church • Elders do scriptural work. "holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict." (Titus 1:9, NKJV) Good Examples "nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock;" (1 Peter 5:3, NKJV) Guided by God’s Word

  8. Rule Well "Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine." (1 Timothy 5:17, NKJV) "And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you," (1 Thessalonians 5:12, NKJV) Labor & Admonish "Now the apostles and elders came together to consider this matter." (Acts 15:6, NKJV) Decide Differences Government of the Lord’s Church • Elders do scriptural work.

  9. Pray "Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all." (1 Thessalonians 5:14-15, NKJV) "Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord." (James 5:14, NKJV) We miss a lot! Government of the Lord’s Church • Elders do scriptural work.

  10. "Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless. Likewise, their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus." (1 Timothy 3:8-13, NKJV) "Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:" (Philippians 1:1, NKJV) Serve Well Deacons Government of the Lord’s Church • Deacons serve the Lord’s church!

  11. "And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ," (Ephesians 4:11-12, NKJV) Gift from Christ! Government of the Lord’s Church • Evangelists preach the word!

  12. Government of the Lord’s Church • Evangelists preach the word! "But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry." (2 Timothy 4:5, NKJV) "Speak these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you." (Titus 2:15, NKJV) "I robbed other churches, taking wages from them to minister to you." (2 Corinthians 11:8, NKJV) "Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching." (2 Timothy 4:2, NKJV)

  13. Government of the Lord’s Church • Members minister in word and deed! "Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world." (James 1:27, NKJV) "Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually." (1 Corinthians 12:27, NKJV) "from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love." (Ephesians 4:16, NKJV) "Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one." (Colossians 4:6, NKJV) "And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also." (2 Timothy 2:2, NKJV)

  14. Government of the Lord’s Church • Do you want to be a member of the Lord’s church? "Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing." (Acts 8:36-39, NKJV) "Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:" (Philippians 1:1, NKJV) "For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body— whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit." (1 Corinthians 12:13, NKJV)
