  3. Background: The key to success in cycling, as in any sport, is development! It is often said that if you take care of development then the elite side of the sport will take care of itself. However the fact is: Solid , meaningful and sustainable development are the foundations for the future success of our sport Cycling participation is on a par with that of Cricket and Rugby Figures quoted in ‘000s

  8. The Present Current scenario: The Role players • Cycling South Africa • South African Cycling Federation • Pedal Power Association • Gauteng Pedal Power Association

The Present Current scenario: Ongoing Initiatives • Cape: • Development Clubs established and operating in Kayelitsha, Delft, Masiphumelela, Kuilsriver, Steenberg, Fish Hoek, Bishop Lavis, Paarl, Ceres, Bellville, Hex River and Tableview • The number development of riders totals well over 100 varying in age from 10 to late 20’s • Support consists of financial, logistical and training • Road, Track and MTB • Eastern Province: • Comprehensive Road and Track Programme • 50 road bikes 30 track bikes issued 2004 • Currently 30 active black scholars on the programme between ages 12 to 19 • Provided the first National SA Champion U12 – Malibongwe Manyati in two disciplines • Griqualand West: • Sustainable MTB and Road Programme • 80 registered scholars ages 10 to 19 • 3 years presented the largest proportion of riders of color in their provincial teams

The Present Current scenario: Ongoing Initiatives • Boland: • Track development programme with representation on the National Track team for 2 years running • 30 scholars on the programme ages 10 to 18 • Gauteng North: • Comprehensive Road and Track Programme • 30 scholars on the database between 12 and 19 • Kwazulu Natal: • Comprehensive Track, BMX, Road and disabled • 35 scholars ages 10 to 18 • 1st ever black South African to be selected for UCI World Cycling Centre for Training and Development – Sifiso Nhlapo BMX world ranked no 8

The Present Challenges facing Cycling SA for the future: • Elitist / TV • Lifestyle Choice with barriers to entry • Recovery of financial benefits accruing to the private sector • Aspirational and “Cool” – The Youth • Safety/Youth/Development • Alternative Transport • Accountability of Volunteers • Creation of Equity • Potential loss of International Event • Responsibility to rest of Africa

The Future Cycling SA faces many new and old challenges With the coming together of the various bodies, the time is now past due to speedily address the needs of all the various role players and stakeholders in SA What does Cycling need: • Professional Business Plan • Revised Structure • Comprehensive development strategy • Marketing, Media and PR campaign • Creation of commercial opportunities • Financial Partnerships • Value to members / clients • Professional, service orientated, businesslike approach

The Future The way forward: PHASE 1 • Restructuring of the organisation with a physical national presence as well as the streamlining / redefinition of roles and responsibilities. • Appointment of a CEO • Creation of equity and financially viable business opportunities to ensure the financial sustainability of our sport • CEO in conjunction with the Board to draw up a five year business plan covering all areas of concern • Introduction of a National database and data management system to facilitate more effective communication • Cycling SA to be treated as a business and operated as a business along the lines of sound business principles Due Date: December 2005

  16. In Conclusion “Cycling for all” across all spectrums of the South African demographic must remain the underpinning philosophy that we move forward with. South Africa can proudly boast the Worlds two largest timed fun rides and also the only International Stage race in sub Saharan Africa. All three of these funded privately through corporate sponsorship and Cycling South Africa initiatives Thank You
