  1. Prompt Anticipation Practice Practice with Gawande’sbetter

  2. Period 1

  3. Group 1 – Naked In Gawande's "Better", the author states"It is unsettling to find how little it takes to defeat success in medicine.  You come as a professional equipped with expertise and technology.  You do no imagine that a mere matter of etiquette could foil you.  But the social dimension turns out to be as essential as the scientific..." Write a thoughtful essay that uses specific evidence to defend, challenge, or qualify the assertion that the "social dimension" has the capacity to "defeat success" in society.

  4. Group 1 – Naked answer the question define social dimension and success use specific evidence apply to society

  5. Group 2 – What Doctors Owe Pg 102 In the text "Better" by AtulGawande, Gawande states that "when the tables are turned and someone close to a doctor is hurt by a medical mistake, our views seem to shift".  Using this quote and the text as a whole, evaluate to what extent people's personal opinions should influence their decisions and actions in the workplace.

  6. Group 2 – What Doctors Owe Clearly answer the question Evaluate the text holistically Define terms 'personal' and 'professional'  Structure the essay efficiently, using multiple paragraphs to separate your ideas

  7. Group 3 – Piecework Pg. 128 Passage: "One American in seven has no coverage, and one in three younger than sixty-five will lose coverage at some point in the next two years. These are people who aren't poor or old enough to qualify for government programs but whose jobs aren't good enough to provide benefits either." Prompt: In Dr. AtulGawand's book "Better" published in 2007 he states, "One American in seven has no coverage, and one in three younger than sixty-five will lose coverage at some point in the next two years. These are people who aren't poor or old enough to qualify for government programs but whose jobs aren't good enough to provide benefits either." Write a thoughtful and carefully constructed essay using specific evidence to agree, disagree, or qualify on Gawande's view on the state of insurance and whether people in the United States are treated equally.

  8. Group 3 – Piecework Define treated equally Answer the question clearly and precisely Develop a holistic approach More analysis rather than summary Using examples to support their argument in an organized manner

  9. Group 4 – The Doctors of the Death Chamber The following passage is taken out of AtulGawande's book, Better, from the chapter "The Doctors of the Death Chamber". Read the passage carefully and then write an essay that agrees, disagrees,  or qualifies Gawande's ultimatum on the ethicality of the death penalty. Use specific evidence to support your position. The truth is what convinces me that we should stand with the ethics code and legally ban the participation of physicians and nurses in executions. And if it turns out that executions cannot then be performed without,  as the courts put it, "unconstitutional pain and cruelty," the death penalty should be abolished. (Gawande 152)

  10. Group 4 – The Doctors of the Death Chamber Answer the question Understand Gawande'sposition Define ethics or morality Understand that the issue is relative to the involvement of medical professional in executions rather than just the death penalty

  11. Group 5 – On Fighting The following passage comes from "Better," a 2007 novel by the author and doctor AtulGawande. Read the passage and then write an essay that defends, challenges, or qualifies Gawande's ideas on giving up. "In the end, no guidelines can tell us what we have power over and what we don't. In the face of uncertainty, wisdom is to err on the side of pushing, to not give up. But you have to be ready to recognize when pushing is only ego, only weakness. You have to be ready to recognize when the pushing can turn to harm." pg. 164

  12. Group 5 – On Fighting Answer the question Provide specific evidence to support their position Define "Giving up, Pushing, and Harm" Use AP level diction Show understanding of Gawande's argument

  13. Period 4

  14. Group 1 – Naked Quote: "Choices must be made. No choice will always be right. There are ways, however, to make our choices better." (Gawande 83) Prompt Question: The following quote is extracted from "Better" by AtulGawande written in 2007. Read the quote carefully, then write an essay that examines the extent to which the quote above can be applied to every day life.

  15. Group 1 – Naked Non-Negotiables:  -answer the question -must have evidence and support for the writer's argument -writer must include a personal connection -must take a stance in regard to the quote -quote must be linked to the idea.

  16. Group 2 – What Doctors Owe Page 101-102 ("This is where we in medicine have failed...finding out what happened.") AtulGawande is a surgeon and author of Better, a collection of essays surrounding the subject of improving performance in the medical field and other jobs with a high level of stress. The following passage is an excerpt from the essay entitled "What Doctors Owe," which explains the malpractice system in the United States. Read the passage carefully and write an essay that examines the extent to which Gawande's statement about the accountability of individuals in situations involving high-risk circumstances is valid in the United States.

  17. Group 2 – What Doctors Owe Define accountability, high-risk Take a position (agree, disagree, qualify) Use relevant examples Clear prose

  18. Group 3 – Piecework Pg. 127-128 Question: The following passage comes from "Better" by an American surgeon AtulGwande, written in 2007. Read the passage carefully and write a well developed essay that examines to what extent the "moral hazard" affects the mind set of American health care recipients.

  19. Group 3 – Piecework Nonnegotiable:  - answer prompt - develop clear position and stated argument  - define justifiable (passage) - discuss current health car system and future implications

  20. Group 4 – The Doctors of the Death Chamber “The easy thing for any doctor or nurse is simply to follow the written rules. But each of us has a duty not to follow rules and laws blindly. In medicine, we face conflicts about what the right and best actions are in all kinds of areas: relief of suffering for the terminally ill, provision of narcotics for patients with chronic pain, withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment for the critically ill, abortion, and executions, to name just a few. All have been the subject of professional rules and government regulation, and at times those rules and regulations have been and will be wrong. We may then be called on to make a choice. We must do our best to choose intelligently and wisely.” Using AtulGawande's The Doctors of the Death Chamber, write a well-developed essay defending, challenging, or qualifying the assertion that "the written rules" do not necessarily follow society's ethical codes if conduct.

  21. Group 4 – The Doctors of the Death Chamber Non-Negotiables 1) answer the question 2) use AtulGawande's The Doctors of the Death Chamber as your primary source of support 3) define written rules and society's codes of conduct 4) have a clear stance with whether you agree, disagree, or qualify

  22. Group 5 – On Fighting AtulGawande writes in his novel Better,  "In the end, guidelines can tell us what we have power over and what we don't. In the face of uncertainty, wisdom is to err on the side of pushing, to not give up. But you have to recognize when pushing is only ego, only weakness. You have to be ready to recognize when pushing can turn to harm". Write a well-developed essay in which you agree, disagree, or qualify the idea that an individual must be conscious of their own limitations.  (Page 164)
