PRE TEST COUNSELING • Privacy and confidentiality!! • Information on HIV and AIDS and ARVs • Explore reasons for testing • Explain technical aspects of the tests • Implication of + or – test • Window period • Legal rights • High risk behaviour • Support and coping • Determine and respect patients wishes • Pt must sign consent!!

  3. POST TEST COUNSELING: positive • Give results face to face, in private • Same person that did pre-test counseling and test • Give results to the pt immediately after available • Let pt absorb the news • Explain what + result means • Explain the need for re-testing • Ask again about support • Information on HIV, AIDS, ARVs • Information on high risk behaviour • Motivate to tell sexual partners • Outline the next step (CD4, TB, vaccines, exam) • Allow for questions • Make follow up appointment if needed

  4. POST TEST COUNSELING: negative • Give results face to face, in private • Same person that did pre-test counseling and test • Give results to the pt immediately after available • Let pt absorb the news • Explain what - result means • Explain window period and re-test in 14 weeks • Information of high risk behaviour • Allow for questions
