  3. Archaic • 8000 – 1000 BC • Spears with atlatl • Deer, bear, small game, wild fruits & vegetables, oysters, shellfish • Semi-permanent shelters; wooden poles covered with deer hides, branches, bark • Burial of dead with tools, weapons, and body ornaments

  4. Woodland • 1000 BC – AD 1000 • Bow and Arrow • Deer, small game, nuts and seeds, squash, gourds – development of agriculture • Sturdy houses in villages • Burial mounds, some with ceremonial objects

  5. Mississippian • AD 1000 – 1600 • Bow and Arrow • Deer, turkey and other small game; corn beans, and other vegetables they planted • Permanent settlements with wattle and daub houses • Burial mounds with food and ceremonial objects
