Innovation Defined: Team 1 Team 2 Team 3 • Dependent of the context • Being able to apply skills & knowledge to new and novel situations • Cutting edge • Whatever “it” is – “it” looks vastly different from the past • Purposeful innovation (not change for the sake of change) • Less about the “teacher” and more about the “learner” – student/learner driven • Creative thinking process • Ideation & goal setting • Open/flexible & relevant to the learner • Engaging and stimulating • Problem based/game based • Meeting the needs of students • May or may not include technology • Moving target • Family & culture is changing • Ability to think outside the box (flexibility) • Exploring different ways to evaluate (i.e. standardized tests) • Courage to accept change • Fertile environment for doing things differently • Culture of experimentation • Utilizing research • Toward effectiveness (not change for change’s sake) • Cutting edge; not bleeding edge • Autonomy to be adaptive (at the school level) • Assessment measurement, student learning outcomes • 21st Century skills

Innovative Things Currently Happening in Jeffco: Team 1 Team 2 Team 3 • New Achievement Director structure • “Opening” doors: principal/school  observations • Classroom Dashboard work • “New systems” roll-out: Dashboard, IR’s • Warren Tech programs • Extended Learning opportunities (travel, summer programs) • Jefferson Foundation: extended support • Variety of learning environment models: Charter/choice options • Drop-out prevention and re-integration supports; partnerships with agencies • Choice/site-based management decisions • Instructional Rounds / mini-rounds • Middle school initiatives (professional development) • Flexible scheduling (block) • Curriculum (critical/conceptual thinking) • 1-1 technology • Dashboard • IB programs (AP, GT, CU Succeeds, etc.) • Core Knowledge charters/ “Fundamental” option schools • Experiential Learning • Legacy grants • Workforce readiness for special education population • Ascent, IB, concurrent enrollment • Classroom dashboard, flipped classroom, 1-to-1 initiative, technology, Virtual Academy • Enrichment (beyond classroom)

Team 1 Team 2 Team 3 • Year calendar/day calendar (non-Agrarian calendar) • Specific “specialized” service programs: i.e. 2e lab • Greater exploration/experience with other models: Expeditionary Learning, Service Learning, Mentorships • Neighborhood schools – creating “identity” implementing innovation • Build out  to community to expand “classroom” • Documenting “mastery”, and moving learners “beyond” • Defining/understanding school strengths and culture • Shut down/Turn around • Open-minded culture • Request for proposal • Building sharing • Cross-district utilization of teacher-researcher/Master teacher expertise • Site based management • Student-centered funding
