  4. This Presentation Will Address • The Digital Divide among older adults • How to empower yourself in “The Digital Age” • How the internet can help with your child’s education • How to keep yourself and your child safe online

Workshop Objectives Attendees will: • Think about what the “Grey Digital Divide” means to them • Learn how technology can be their friend, not their foe • Learn about the benefits that the internet can have on their children’s education • Become more aware of the dangers of the internet and how to keep their children safe while online

  6. What is the Grey Digital Divide? • A digital divide is an inequality between groups, in terms of access to, use of, or knowledge of Information and Communication Technologies (Digital Divide, 2012). • The U.S.= Inequality between wealthy and poor • The “Grey” aspect refers to older adults who are excluded from the internet for various reasons (Millward, 2003). • Is the term “Grey” appropriate?

The Grey Gap • The Grey Gap is getting wider due to the expansion of the “Boomers.” • According to the U.S. Census (2010), between 2000-2010 the population of adults aged 45-64 grew at a rate of 31.5% • In 2010, New Mexico had 548,945 adults between the ages of 45-64 living in NM, that’s 26.7% of the population! • This number is growing! New Mexico is predicted to have one of the highest percentages of persons over the age of 65. • “Silver Tsunami” where more than 10,000 people turn 65 years old in the U.S. everyday

Effects of the Grey Gap • Government services now only online: • Food Stamps (S.N.A.P) • Applications for Social Security and Medicare • What other programs/services are completely online now? • Without access to the internet or avoidance of technology by older adults, they will slowly begin to fall behind to participate in government programs or basic services.

Benefits of the Internet for Adults • Increases sense of self-efficacy and independence • Increases communication among friends and family • Allows access to many agencies and programs that are fully online now • Access to a wide-array of educational tools and resources for you and your child/children • Broadens your horizons

  10. How the Internet Empowers People • According to Orita, Niimi, and Murai (2000), there are 3 ways in which the internet empowers ordinary individuals: • 1. Publishing • 2. Being Linked • 3. Joining an Open Communication Space

How to Empower Yourself • Knowledge is the key • Take a computer class to learn • Keep in mind that the more you learn about the internet, the more you will be ahead of the “Grey Divide” • Think of the benefits to you and your child/children • You do not need to know “Techno-Babble” or everything about a computer to reap the benefits • Educate yourself about how to stay safe on the internet

The Internet and Your Child’s Education • Internet access can help children become more communicative and creative • Improves academic growth and exposes them to educational content they might not encounter otherwise • Internet access greatly expands the number of quality resources available for social studies, sciences, and fine arts • In a Nebraska project, youngsters used email to communicate with senior citizens in their community, and the result was increased opportunity for learning, bonding and understanding (Dunlap, 2010).

The Internet and Your Child’s Education • Computer use expands children’s world view • Children in rural locations can pay virtual visits to art museums; city kids can learn about farms and forests • Computer use exponentially increases options for creative growth and artistic expression • Computers allow children of many age groups to develop artistic skills in photography, film-making, drawing and design, in addition to music(Dunlap, 2010).

  14. The Downsides to the Internet • Stranger Danger • Cyberbullying • Access to malicious or inappropriate material • Social media concerns • No parental control is 100% reliable • Children can become “zombies” with too much time spent on the internet

Cyberbullying • Kids should never share Internet passwords with anyone other than parents, experts say. • Help them use the "block" or "ban" feature to prevent the bully from contacting them. • Don’t be afraid to simply delete an email account • Tell your child not to respond to rude or harassing emails, messages and postings. Recap • The Digital Divide among older adults is growing • The more we shy away from the internet, the more difficult it will be to catch up • The internet has many pros and cons for your children • Be aware of the dangers of the internet • Empower yourself with knowledge in all areas of the internet
