  1. CHRISTIAN PARENTING Part Two: The Kindergarten Period(3-6 years)

  2. The Kindergarten Period(3-6 years) 1)GROWTH: A)Physical growth: jumping, hopping B)Sensorygrowth C)Time perception: -Immediate gratification -Yesterday & tomorrow -Mixing reality with fantasy

  3. 1)GROWTH(CONT.) D)Linguistic growth: -“No” stage  “WHY” stage -At 3 years 800 words  at 5 years 2,000 -Different pronouns E)Emotional growth: -Oedipus & Electra complex  sharing -Parents are “Omnipotent”

  4. 2)Some symptoms in this phase: A) Thumb sucking B) Bed wetting C) Playing with private parts D) Sexual questions E) Nightmares F) Sibling rivalry

  5. 3)What should we do: • Encouragement (continuation of & increased autonomy phase) • Respect children • Avoid violence: to spank or not to spank, that is the question.

  6. c) To spank or not to spank, that is the question: • The “Verse” that does not exist in the Bible: • “Do not hit your son, but if you do, hit him with a rod of iron!!” • Book of Proverbs: • 19:18 “Chasten your son while there is hope, and do not get your heart on his destruction” • 22:15 “Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child, the rod of correction will drive it for from him” • 23: 13 “Do not withhold correction from a child, For if you beat him with a rod, he will not die”

  7. Rod of iron • Ps 2:9 • “You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.” • Also in Rev. 2:27, 12:5, 19:15 • “He will rule with a rod of iron” • Harshness destroys the self esteem and generates silent anger • Permissiveness produces a dependent, narcissistic adult

  8. An example of permissiveness: • 1Sam 3,4 • Eli the priest had 2 sons :Hophni and Phinehas • God told Samuel • “… became his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them” • He had no personal sin • “ All children don’t disobey their parents; some are never told what to do!” •  “A ‘brat’ is a child who acts like your own but belongs to your neighbor !”

  9. Prov. 29:15: • “A child left to himself brings shame to his mother” • Healthy discipline: • There is a thin line between: • Firmness without violence • And love without spoiling

  10. The criteria for spanking: • Not for the mistake but for the stubbornness • Make the punishment fit the crime • Controlled • By the hand, on the hand or the bottom. • Specify the reason

  11. Our parents vs. our Father:Heb. 12:9-11 • Heb 12:9-11 • “Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live?10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness.11 Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”

  12. d) The importance of mothers: By the end of the fifth year of life,75 -80% of the personality is already formed. Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” • e) Children do as we do, not as we say. (2 Tim 1:5) • “when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.”

  13. f) Two busy parents ----------> too messed-up children The best thing we can spend on our children is………..

  14. How to impart Christianity to my child: • 1- Be a teacher • Deut 6:6-9 • 6 "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.7 "You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.8 "You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.9 "You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”

  15. 1- Be a teacher (cont.) • a) Bed time story • b) Verses • c) Church songs • d) Pictures • e) Books • f) Explain the occasions: • A church occasion • A family occasion • g) read the icons

  16. 1- Be a teacher (cont.) •  “Too often an abandoned child is one who is still living with his parents!” • 2) Be an example of Christian behavior •  “Children are a great deal more open to follow your lead than the way you point” •  “It is extremely difficult for a child to live right if he has never seen it done”

  17. 3) Be a symbol of Christ: • A) Christ the involved • “Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil” (Heb 2:14) • B) Christ the loving • C) Christ the forgiving • 4) Be only a symbol of Christ

  18. “Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, I’ve asked you here today to discuss Billy’s refusal to abide by the school dress code!”
