  2. Skim Before You Read Before reading a selection skim over it letting your eyes pause only at terms or words that seem to “jump out” at you (previewing). Skimming allows you to find the overall topic and get an idea of what the text is about.

  3. Scan After You Read After you have read a selection scan the text for specific information that will assist you in answering questions or summarizing (reviewing). Scanning can also be used to look over notes while preparing for a test.

  4. Review of Key Points • Skimming is a quick glance at a text before reading (previewing). • Scanning is looking at a text for specific information after reading ( reviewing).
