  1. TRPC Smart Corridors: implementing DTA using DYNAMEQThe 22nd INTERNATIONAL EmmeUsERS’ CONFERENCESeptember 16, 2011Portland, or BharathPaladugu TRPC Clyde Scott Independent Consultant Ming-Bang Shyu Fehr & Peers

  2. Presentation outline • TRPC Smart Corridors project overview • DTA model development using DYNAMEQ • TRPC Modeling set up and vision • I-5/US 101 Interchange Feasibility Study • Where do we go from here?

  3. Geography THURSTON COUNTY SMART CORRIDORS

  4. SMART CORRIDORS PROJECT OVERVIEW • To improve multimodal traffic operations on the corridors. • Analyze operational needs • Evaluate alternatives such as signal coordination and transit signal priority • Investment strategy • So, what tool do we use? • Traffic operations at a regional scale DTA MODEL

  5. DYNAMEQ DTA model development • Import regional model from EMME • Network refinements: • Intersection controls and geometry • Signal timing data for about 80 signalized intersections • Centroid loading points • OD Trip Matrices: • SOV, HOV, Trucks • PM Peak 1-hour trip tables from EMME • 30-minute shoulders • Calibration/Validation: • Link counts and Intersection turning movement counts • Travel time and speed data • Lane queues

  6. Simulation results OUTFLOW DENSITY

  7. TRPC Models set up and vision EMME MODEL DYNAMEQ MODEL

  8. I-5/US 101 Interchange Feasibility Study • Key system Interchange • Safety and mobility issues • To identify existing and future needs • Analyze a range feasible alternatives - • Capital improvements • Ramp metering • Shoulder running

  9. I-5/US 101 STUDY NETWORK REFINEMENTS I-5/US 101 Study Subarea Model Smart Corridors Model

  10. Dta assignment Convergence Trip Tables • Modes: SOV, HOV, Trucks • PM Peak Period - 2 hours • PM peak hour demand from EMME model • 30 minute shoulders • Peaking factors

  11. ALTERNATIVES ANALYSIS BRAIDED RAMPS

  12. RESULTS – MANDATORY LANE CHANGE

  13. RESULTS – QUEUE LENGTHS

  14. RESULTS – NODE DELAYS

  15. RESULTS - DENSITY

  16. CONCLUSIONS AND NEXT STEPS • DTA model and Planning for Operations • DYNAMEQ and opportunity for the jurisdictions to integrate signal coordination efforts • Data needs • Subarea – can we fill the donut hole back? • Best practices to coordinate EMME/DYNAMEQ model developments
