What Makes a Leader?HBR, Nov-Dec 1998, 93-102 • Self-Awareness – the ability to recognize and understand your moods, emotions, and drives, as well as their effect on others • Self-Regulation – the ability to control disruptive impulses; think before acting • Motivation – propensity to pursue goals with energy & persistence; internal, not external drivers

  3. Learn to Manage Yourself (cont.) • Emotional Intelligence • Empathy – ability to understand the emotional makeup of others; treat them accordingly • Social Skills – ability to find common ground and build rapport; manage relationships

  6. #8Learn How to Work with Subordinates • Be respectful of others - especially the little guy • Acknowledge people and achievements – right thing to do; pays dividends too • “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care” • Don’t criticize in public • Ask; don’t tell people what to do

  7. Learn How to Work with Subordinates (cont.) • Delegate to give people an opportunity to grow - then support their needs • You can’t treat everyone the same • Don’t bring up something new in reviews • Hire carefully; fire promptly • Provide a “loose-tight” work environment

  8. #7Learn How to Work with Your Boss • Know your boss’ style and preferences – reader vs. listener; how expectations communicated • Bring solutions, not problems • Make it easy for your boss to say “yes” • Anticipate questions • Be persistent in selling ideas

  9. Learn How to Work with Your Boss (cont.) • Choose your battles – only so many silver bullets • Educate your boss – your responsibility • Don’t let your boss get blind-sided • Exercise caution when your hiring boss leaves – paradigm is back to zero

  10. #6Learn How to Influence People Who Don’t Report to You • Learn how to communicate well in writing & verbally • Listen to others; value their opinions – shows respect; they may know better • Seek input from stakeholders • Know your audience’s perspective • Learn win-win negotiation skills

Learn How to Influence People Who Don’t Report to You (cont.) • Voice your opinion objectively during discussions - but support the final decision • Don’t pre-judge people • Be a team player; take a broad perspective - not always your own interest • Realize that there are almost always two sides to every story • Focus on the person you are talking with

  12. #5Balance Work, Family, and Personal Time • Understand what is important in your life – write your own obituary; list lifetime goals/to-do’s • Create your own life; don’t let others define it for you • Realize you won’t get a 2nd chance to raise your children • Find time for personal renewal; learn to engage and disengage quickly

  13. Balance Work, Family, and Personal Time (cont.) • Don’t define yourself solely by what you do on the job – there must be more to you • Don’t ignore long term needs - (e.g., retirement planning) • Work hard, but “take time to smell the roses along the way”

  14. #4Have a Dream and the Goals to Support It • Reflect on your life’s goals periodically • “Plan your work; work your plan” • Know your circles of control, influence, and interest • Focus, focus, focus • Stretch yourself; volunteer for tough assignments

  15. Have a Dream and the Goals to Support It (cont.) • Do something to move along your “A” items • YOU need to make it happen - “I never worry about action; but only about inaction” • “…the most difficult thing in doing good business is to say no to…the bad opportunities…”

  16. #3Find Your Passion • Have a passion for what you do • Follow what you love to do – even if it doesn’t have the glitz and money • Be really good at what you do; find a niche and become an expert • Devote yourself to continual learning – “The illiterate of the future are not those who cannot read or write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn”

  17. #2Be a Positive Influence on Others • Consider what this takes; this alone will assure success • Put others first – “If you want to be first, go to the back of the line” • Say those things you want to say; tomorrow may be too late

  18. #1Protect Your Integrity • Realize that you are always on stage • Realize integrity is difficult to achieve; easy to lose - Disney “Magic Moments” • Avoid potentially embarrassing moments • Avoid gossip and criticizing others • Be honest, but tactful and sensitive • “Always do what is right. It will gratify most of the people, and astound the rest”

  19. Protect Your Integrity (cont.) • “The most important enduring aspect of a person’s ability to make a difference comes not from brains and motivation, but from character. And at the heart of character is an old-fashioned value that is overlooked and underrated. Trust. Every human transaction rests, either implicitly or explicitly, on a foundation of trust…or lack thereof.”

  20. My wish for you… • that you know now what others wish they knew 25 years ago – but learned the hard way - so you don’t have to
