  1. Understanding Fractions By Jacob Year 5

  2. What is a Fraction? • A fraction is a way of measuring part of a whole set of something. • A fraction is one or more parts of something split into equal parts fractions are made up of a numerator (top number) and a denominator (a bottom number).

  3. Numerators and Denominators • The numerator (the number) above the line of a fraction is the number of same equal parts being measured • The denominator (the number) below the line of a fraction is the number of equal pieces into which something is divided

  4. What do Fractions look like? • A fraction can be written two ways either as two numbers on top of each other with a line between them or as a decimal • For example ½ = 0.5 or ¾ = 0.75

  5. Proper and Improper Fractions • A fraction which has a smaller top number than the bottom number is called a proper fraction. • For example ½ or ¾ would be proper fractions • If the top number is bigger than the bottom number this is called an improper fraction • For example 5/4 or 6/4 would be improper fractions

  6. Adding Fractions Together • Fractions can be added together for example 1/3 + 2/3 = 1

  7. Equivalent and Mixed Fractions •  Some fractions can have different numbers at the top and bottom but represent the same thing for example ½ and 2/4 or 3/6 or 4/8 all mean the same thing which in this case is half of something. These are called equivalent fractions. • Some fractions can have whole numbers and fractions these are called Mixed fractions for example • 1 ½ or 2 ½ we have to learn which is the largest number :

  8. What Next • There are some good fraction games on www.whizz.com/maths/fractions/games • See how far you can get I got all Year 5, Year 6 and Year 7 Quizzes Correct so good luck • Hope you understand fractions a bit better Jacob
