  1. Matt Monroe 4/7/11 Mobile Peer-to-Peer Network Architectures

  2. Client-Server Model • Clients connect directly to a central server • All communication between clients happens by communicating with the central server

  3. Problems With Client-Server • Network Bottleneck • Server Overload • High Latency • Inefficient Bandwidth Use

  4. Peer-to-Peer Network Basics • Allow Clients to connect to each other directly • More Efficient • Lowers Latency

  5. Peer-Client-Server Model • Clients can communicate with other clients directly • Clients also communicate with remote server

  6. Problems with Peer-Client-Server • Server Overload Not Resolved • Single Point of Failure • Still high latency if remote server is used heavily

  7. Super-Node Model • Clients form sub-networks • Sub-networks controlled by a ”Super-Node” • Super-Nodes connect together sub-networks

  8. Problems with Super-Node • Super-Node clients could have poor experience • Critical Mass Issue • Data Distribution • Higher Development Cost

  9. Fully-Distributed Model • Clients connect to other clients near them • All clients are equal • ”Truly” Peer-to-Peer

  10. Problems with Fully-Distributed • Critical Mass User Base • High Development Effort • Useless in Low Population Density Areas • Data Distribution
