  2. PDR • Provides essential information about drugs and medications currently in use • Both Rx and OTC (over the counter) • Published yearly to provide up-to-date information on drugs

  3. Manufactures’ Index • Initial white section of book • Major drug manufacturers in US are listed in Alphabetical order • Manufacturers addresses, telephone and names of key contact people and partial list of products

  4. Brand and Generic Name Index • Second main section usually in pink • Products are listed alphabetically by both brand name and generic name • An underline denotes a generic name

  5. Brand/Generic Name Cont. • Under each generic name , you will find a list of brand that contain it • Manufacturer name will be list in ( ) • Bold page numbers indicate complete prescribing information

  6. Product Category Index • Third main section and normally blue in color • Provides a quick reference section for drugs available for various conditions

  7. Product Category Cont. • Index list products by prescribing categories- identifies all agents with a given therapeutic use • May have sub-groups to aid in search

  8. Category and Sub-category • Example-Category Anti-infective agent • Sub-category Antihelmintics Antibiotics Antifungal

  9. Product Indentification Section • Fourth Section of PDR • Provides colored actual size pictures of a variety of drugs

  10. Product Information • Largest section of book and white in color • Contains detailed list of drugs and discussion on the chemical nature, indication for use, contraindications, warnings, routes and administration

  11. Information Cont. • Contraindications- should not be given the drug • Warnings- weigh the advantages and disadvantages • Adverse reaction- side-effects seen by a few patients

  12. Utilization of PDR • Important to check information in PDR regarding actions, dosage, side effects, and other vital facts on medication • Section used depends on information desired

  13. PDR • The PDR can be found on the internet • Also many Physicians use a hand held type computer version of the PDR • These version can be updated easily
