  2. Overview Enhanced teaching and learning activities based on feedback from a structured assessment process were incorporated to improve course performance. Continuous improvement has helped students meet specified learning objectives through effective teaching methods. Howard University School of Pharmacy IDEA Users Group Meeting 1/20/10

  3. The Role of Assessment in the Pharmacy Curriculum The 2007 Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) Standards require colleges to assess the attainment of desired student learning outcomes. As part of our school's assessment, we utilized data from the IDEA Student Ratings Report to assess how well students fulfilled the professional competencies and outcome expectations outlined in the ACPE standards. Howard University School of Pharmacy IDEA Users Group Meeting 1/20/10

  4. The Role of Assessment in the Pharmacy Curriculum: ACPE Standard 15… contd Standard No. 15: Assessment and Evaluation of Student Learning and Curricular Effectiveness As a component of its evaluation plan, the college or school must develop and carry out assessment activities to collect information about the attainment of desired student learning outcomes. The assessment activities must employ a variety of valid and reliable measures systematically and sequentially throughout the professional degree program. The college or school must use the analysis of assessment measures to improve student learning and the achievement of the professional competencies. Howard University School of Pharmacy IDEA Users Group Meeting 1/20/10

  5. The Role of Assessment in the Pharmacy Curriculum: ACPE Standard 15 The college or school must systematically and sequentially evaluate its curricular structure, content, organization, and outcomes. The college or school must use the analysis of outcome measures for continuous improvement of the curriculum and its delivery. Howard University School of Pharmacy IDEA Users Group Meeting 1/20/10

  6. Assessment Instruments Standardized instruments for anonymous data collection are used to evaluate the professional program. These instruments include the Individual Development and Education Assessment (IDEA) Center Student Ratings of Instruction Diagnostic Form Reports andthe American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Curriculum Quality Surveys . Howard University School of Pharmacy IDEA Users Group Meeting 1/20/10

  7. Role of IDEA Center in Pharmacy Curriculum The School of Pharmacy uses a valid and reliable method of providing feedback to faculty regarding teaching and learning following course conclusion. The IDEA Center, an external source for objective assessment data analysis regarding faculty instruction, is employed. During the Fall and Spring semesters, student responses from various courses taught in the School of Pharmacy are evaluated using the Student Ratings of Instruction Diagnostic Form. Data is analyzed and reported back to the program for review. Howard University School of Pharmacy IDEA Users Group Meeting 1/20/10

  8. IDEA Center Data Standardized instruments identify key learning objectives (labeled Essential or Important) as well as utilization of effective teaching and learning styles for specific courses. 15. Case Study: Restructuring Integrated Therapeutics Lab 1 to Enhance Teaching and Learning Effectiveness Course Description: The Integrative Therapeutics Laboratory course complements and runs parallel with the Integrative Therapeutics didactic course during the Spring semester. Students participate in small group discussions, practical laboratory exercises, onsite senior shadowing with direct patent care activities, SOAP case write-ups, SOAP presentations and an oral exam to reinforce didactic teachings and overall student learning. Howard University School of Pharmacy IDEA Users Group Meeting 1/20/10

  16. Case Study: Restructuring Integrated Therapeutics Lab 1 to Enhance Teaching and Learning Effectiveness Methodology: The Integrated Therapeutics Lab I course was evaluated in the Spring of 2006 and 2007. Course survey forms consisting of questions in the areas of (1) instructor’s teaching procedures, (2) students making progress on meeting twelve course learning objectives, and (3) course / faculty utilization of five categories of teaching and learning styles were administered to the class. Howard University School of Pharmacy IDEA Users Group Meeting 1/20/10

  17. Case Study: Restructuring Integrated Therapeutics Lab 1 to Enhance Teaching and Learning Effectiveness Methodology: A designated evaluator functioning independently from the course coordinator administered the evaluations at a pre- determined time and date designated on the course syllabus. Approximately eighty-six students completed the evaluations in a twenty-minute time period. Surveys are collected and sent to the IDEA Center for analysis Howard University School of Pharmacy IDEA Users Group Meeting 1/20/10
