  1. Are You Keeping Your Skin Safe this Summer?

  2. Hello Summer! • Summer has finally stepped up to the plate and we for one are beyond excited. After a long, cold winter (one of the coldest Australia has had in YEARS, might we add!), we are absolutely ready to spend our evenings lounging in fairy-light strung beer gardens and our weekends sprawled on the beach. Aren't you? • Unfortunately, Summer isn't just home to your best bikini and the fruitiest cocktail on the menu - it's also home to a variety of skin conditions that are ready to put a downer on your Summer high. • It's important to be aware of the ways in which the sun can affect your skin - and even more important to know how to prevent and treat these problems should they arise!

  3. But never fear, we're here to let you know some of the most common conditions your skin might suffer from this summer, and how you can kick them to the kerb!

  4. Sunburn • Without a doubt, sunburn is the most common ailment we suffer from during the Summer months. • Even though there are plenty of ways to prevent it, such as making sure to apply the right amount of sun cream at the right intervals (1 oz or about a shot glass worth, every 2 hours), staying well hydrated (with water, not alcohol), and sticking to the shade during the hottest parts of the day, it’s still extremely easy to fall victim to sunburn in Australia!

  5. Sunburn (cont’d) • If you find yourself with skin the colour of a lobster this Summer, the best thing to do is to take an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen to reduce inflammation and irritation, rehydrate yourself with plenty of water, rehydrate and soothe your sunburnt skin with aloe vera treatments, cover up the affected area and get out of the sun as soon as possible! • Don’t worry - you can still sip on Pina Coladas from the comfort of the shade!

  6. Rosacea • Symptoms of Rosacea vary from patient-to-patient but can include flushed skin, persistent facial redness, visible blood vessels, and sensitive skin that burns, itches, and stings. • While no-one's entirely sure what causes Rosacea, we do know it can often be triggered by exposure to sunlight, hot weather, and alcohol (amongst others factors) - a few things that can be hard to avoid over the Australian Summer holidays! • If you suffer from Rosacea, you’ll want to do all you can to minimise skin irritation and flare ups, including using quality sunscreen and skin products designed specifically for sensitive skin. As Rosacea triggers vary widely, it’s recommended you keep a diary to help identify what causes yours to flare up.

  7. Rosacea • When you do suffer from a flare up, your doctor can provide topical and oral treatments such as antibiotics to help minimise inflammation and redness. • However, for long-lasting results skin treatments such as laser therapy can do wonders. • If you think you might suffer from rosacea, ask La Belle Peau about our treatment options.

  8. Actinic Keratosis • Don’t worry - Actinic Keratosis isn’t nearly as scary as it sounds! • This condition is more commonly known as sunspots, and it’s not uncommon for skin that has been exposed to sun for several years and is prone to being sunburnt. • Sunspots can be prevented by avoiding midday sun and tanning beds, as well as making sure to use sunscreen whenever you’ll be exposed to the sun. • There are also several ways to treat this condition, including our pain-free DermaFrac treatment.

  9. Folliculitis • We all love strutting about in our best workout gear - maybe even grabbing a bite to eat post-workout while we’re feeling particularly fit and fab. • But if you’re spending a bit too much time in your spandex, you could be at risk of developing Folliculitis. • Folliculitis is a bacterial infection that thrives in the Summer months. • To prevent these itchy red bumps around your shoulders and thighs, make sure to always rinse off straight after a workout and change into some looser-fitting clothes.

  10. We have a range of treatments and therapies available that are completely unique to you. To find out more, contact our Perth skin care clinic for a free consultation and personalised treatment plan.
