  2. Welcome to 1st Grade! • ** First grade is a big change from kindergarten. • **There is more independent work and students have to work • at a faster pace.

  3. Our Goals • To give your child the academic and social skills needed to progress to 2nd grade. • To provide your child a supportive, safe, and fun classroom environment. • To help your child make new friends and discover new interests. • To partner with you for a • successful school year.

  4. Class Subjects • The subjects we cover during 1st grade are: • Literacy: Journey’s (Language Arts, Reading, Spelling, Grammar, Vocabulary, and Writing) • Math: Eureka Math, aligned to Common Core Practices • Science • Social Studies • Music, P.E., Technology (I & II) – these • are the Encore/Prep Classes

  5. Homework Folders • Each child must have a homework folder. • 1st Homework Folder is free. After that each folder will cost $1.00. • If lost or damaged it must be replaced. • This is a 1st grade expectation!

Homework Folders (cont.) • Students will be responsible to take homework folder home daily and return it the next school day. • Teachers will circle a daily grade on newsletter each day. • Parents should look at folder/newsletter daily and sign/initial that they saw the • grade and that all practice work was • completed including 20 minutes of • reading & reading log.

  7. Homework • Yes, there will be homework! • Students will generally have language, math, and reading log. • Read with your child for 20 minutes and simply write the title down on the newsletter. • All homework will usually be the same in all three classrooms. • All homework is due the next day.

Reading Curriculum Components • Guided Reading • Balanced Literacy: Journey’s • Close Reading/Shared Reading/Interactive Reading, Phonics/Phonemic Awareness • Literacy Work Stations/Daily Five • Thinking Maps, Graphic Organizers • Grammar, Parts of Speech, Sentence Structure • Daily/Weekly Writing Topics • Accelerated Reading Tests • Think Central

  9. Math Curriculum Components • 1st grade teachers will follow the districts pacing guide and add skills as necessary in order for students to be ready for 2nd grade. • Eureka Math, utilizing manipulatives • Zearnand Prodigy Websites

  10. Grading Scale • A – 90-100 • B – 80-89 • C – 70-79 • D – 60-69 • F – 0-59

  11. 1st Grade District Wide Testing • NWEA/MAP– Reading and Math Assessment given to all students • Benchmark testing is done 3 times per year • Students are then progress monitored once a week, twice or month, or once a month based on their benchmark scores using aimswebPlus.

  12. Lunch Information • All students are eligible for a free hot lunch. • Students who bring cold lunch, but would like to have a milk should bring 40 cents to pay for the milk. • 1st grade lunch time – • 12:15-12:45pm

  13. Dismissal • If your child is going home a different way than usual, please send a note or call the school to let us know!

How you can help your child at home • Have your child read to you • Read with your child • Help your child communicate in writing by making lists, writing notes, keeping a journal, and creating stories • Work on addition, subtraction, telling time, place value, money, and any • other math topic being taught • in the classroom

  15. How you can help your child at home (continued) • Assist your child in packing their backpack. Please make sure your child’s Homework Folder, Library books, notes, and any other items are in his/her backpack before leaving for school. • Have your child go to bed at a • reasonable time so he/she is • ready to learn and alert while at • school.

How you can help the classroom • AR Test Helper • Clerical Assistance (make copies, cut out items, etc) • Reading Buddy/Read with students • Snacks: 19 Students (no peanuts or strawberries) • Send needed items to the classroom (Kleenex, hand sanitizer, Clorox cleaning wipes, baby wipes, dry erase markers, spiral notebooks, folders, pencils, erasers, glue sticks etc.)
