  2. Motataisi – The Guider INTRODUCTION. The Digital Doorway in Lesotho. • Registered an as NGO – Motataisi Foundation in 2009 Composition – Champion and Local Team of 8 individual people, National and International advisers and donors and envisaged volunteers, Mentor and Advisor (Michael Jenkins) MISSION To facilitate computer literacy though the use communal Motataisi (Digital Doorways) and other related devices throughout Lesotho in order to provide communities with a facility through which they can learn, communicate and access information that would assist proper literacy programmes for functional and vocational training to enhance their status and capabilities. – The Need - Poor and rural communities are often denied the means and tools to develop their own gateways out of poverty • Deliver where the market cannot – Poor and rural communities often have no access to most services as they do not have enough money to buy the services. • Deliver where the Government cannot – Poor and rural communities are often ignorant on how to get government and other social services (e.g. passports, accessing social welfare benefits; medical, legal and educational information).

Motataisi – The Guider Project Summary • Through Motataisi – help the disadvantaged population communicate interactively and better understand one another, share know how and generate passion in solving problems pertaining to their geographic communities; • Through Motataisi – assist the disadvantaged communities to use information, news and academic resources and imagine their collective possibilities as communities, and to set and reach common community goals; • Through Motataisi – dig for academic information, news and act on it, including new ways to collect, prepare and distribute information that reveals hard to know facts, identifies common problems, clarifies geographic community issues or points out practical courses of action; Thus Motataisi seeks to bestir the people into an awareness of their own condition, provide inspiration for their thoughts and rouse them to pursue their true interests.

Motataisi – The Guider Main Objective • To facilitate the roll out of communal Motataisi (Digital Doorways) and other related devices throughout Lesotho to enable targeted groups in the rural areas, in community centers, schools, clinics and business establishments, access to the relevant ICT information services. With a 2000 Digital Doorways within 2 years • Targeting 500 villages in rural Lesotho • Enabling 10,000 students achieve better pass rates and continue into tertiary institutions • Enabling 10,000 community people participate in income-generating activities, • Upgrading the capabilities and production volumes of 1000 community centers

Motataisi – The Guider • To provide the relevant technology support including online (internet) services to enhance their internal capacities and capabilities and awareness of the importance of doing business in their natural environment to fight poverty; • To embrace initiatives that will improve access to and choices to an empowering knowledge base without favour or discrimination by sex, disability, political and religious affiliation, but that will generate passion in solving problems pertaining to their geographic communities; • To link their communal income-generating and economic activities to the national and global strategies against poverty in order to derive the inherent social and economic benefits and equitable social development growth at grassroots level; • To increase peer interaction, idea exchange and critical thinking skills through continuous training and awareness campaigns, as well as the development and updating of information aimed at closing the technological information gap common to their communities; • To empower individuals, households and communities with the necessary skills to gain greater control of their livelihoods through projects that will foster respect for their human rights and dignity;

Motataisi – The Guider BENEFITS AND OUTCOMES • Transfer of information to the community and creation of awareness and knowledge. • Customized content and applications to meet community requirements, • Access to a service without discrimination, and an appropriate environment to communicate and learn; improved computer awareness and literacy; opportunity for users to interact with technology on their own terms, and without external resources, • The promotion of employment opportunities to fight poverty in general and across board, • The promotion of educational opportunities as a way to equip the communities with adequate skills, • The investment in rural infrastructures is capable of supporting intensified education, agriculture, tourism, combating environmental degradation and skills development. • Development and promotion of guidelines sectoral management issues, such as in health, environment, human rights, tourism etc, linked with adequate support and explanations to keep communities and f amilies together.

Motataisi – The Guider Current Situation • We need financial support, expertise, volunteers to: • Harvest and develop local content for uploading • Train local people in relevant technology for continuous content upgrading and development • Train local people in technology/ DD maintenance • Roll out more Motataisi throughout the country • Replicate the DD in Lesotho to create skills transfer and sustainability
