    4. “Getting results – Pathology Services in Acute and Specialist Trusts” Healthcare commission review: March 2007 81% clinicians surveyed praised the support and guidance received and 89% the quality of supporting information on reports Despite increasing demand from clinicians, most pathology departments are turning round tests faster

    5. Healthcare Commission contd. Some Trusts slow to adopt new technology or develop the potential of networks Need to focus on value for money and consistency of service

    6. Carter review: next phase? ACB continues to engage with the review process as a stakeholder Pilot site projects complete Publication of second report due “early” 2008 Not yet with ministers; likely to link with next phase of Lord Darzi’s work

Modernising Scientific Careers 5 year project led by CSO (Prof. Sue Hill) and assisted by Prof Shelley Heard (former Lead Medical Dean for pathology and current Director of Education at RCPath) To run in parallel with Skills for Health Broad aim to simplify education and training for all Healthcare Scientists across 9 stages of HCS career framework Dr Beastall and Dr Watson have met with project leads

    13. Revalidation: a two part process 1. Relicensure (5yearly) GMC Annual appraisal Multi-source feedback Confirmation of the resolution of any local concerns about conduct 2. Recertification (5yearly) RCPath Positive confirmation to GMC that a pathologist meets agreed standards for specialist practice RCPath Professional Standards Unit needs to develop appropriate tools for competency assessment of medical pathologists ACB/ACS input to DH needed for clinical scientists

    17. Broadening the membership Proposed at national AGM 2007 ACB Council (November) debated various proposals: see ACB News Jan 2008 Dr Gwyn McCreanor (ACB Secretary) and National members to prepare a further paper Agreed proposals will be brought to national AGM
