  3. Introduction • Today’s lesson… • To show the horrible, lasting results of sin • To reveal God’s promise to send a Deliverer to rescue mankind from their penalty of sin

  4. Review • God created Man in His own image for His glory • They belonged to Him • God loved them • God had given them everything they could ever need – Food, Place to Stay, Companion • God warned them of the consequences of disobedience • Adam and Eve had CHOSEN to disobey Him

  5. God called Adam • Read Genesis 3:9-13 • 9 But the LORD God called to the man, "Where are you?" 10 He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid." 11 And he said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?" 12 The man said, "The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it." 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?“ The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."

  6. God called Adam • Gen 3:9 But the LORD God called to the man, "Where are you?" • Why did God call out to Adam? • God was pursuing them, He still loved them • God was giving them a chance to admit they disobeyed and had listened to Satan instead of him.

  7. Adam Hides from God • Gen 3:10 He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.“ • Why would Adam be afraid because he was naked? • Adam knew what they did and he knew the punishment for their sin • 11 And he said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?“ • Why is God asking questions if he already knows? • II Peter 3:9 • Hebrews 4:13

  8. Adam & Eve Pass the Blame • Gen 3:12 The man said, "The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it." • Adam blames the woman • Adam blames God for putting the woman with him • 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?“ The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate." • Eve blames the serpent • How is this relevant to us today?

  9. Effects of their Disobedience • Broken Relationships • With each other and God, hide from God • Shame • Self awareness vs God awareness • Fear of consequences • Penalty of Sin • Blame others • It is someone else’s fault for my sin

  10. Check for Understanding • Why did God call out to Adam? • Does God call out to us today and how? • Why do you think Adam and Eve tried to Hide from God? • Can you hide from God? • Who’s fault was it that Adam and Eve disobeyed God?

  11. God’s curse on the serpent • Read Genesis 3:14 • So the LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, "Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. • The snake had been crafty but now it was cursed • Must crawl on its belly • Since snakes don’t eat dust, Dust may be a reference to total defeat • Psalm 72:9, Isaiah 49:23

  12. God’s promised deliverer • Read Genesis 3:15 • And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." • What is enmity? deep-rooted hatred. "I will put enmity between thee and the woman, between thy seed and her seed" (Gen. 3:15). The friendship of the world is "enmity with God" (James 4:4; 1 John 2:15, 16). The "carnal mind" is "enmity against God" (Rom. 8:7). • Who is the “he” referring to? • The Promised Deliverer – An offspring of the woman • What do they mean by he will crush your head and strike his heel. • The Deliverer will Crush Satans Authority or leadership. If you crush the head, the body cant survive. The Heel - Satan may wound the deliverer but he will survive.

  13. What the Promise Means • God is loving, merciful and gracious. • Man disobeyed and deserved the penalty of eternal death right then and there, but God being gracious and merciful already made plans to send a deliverer to save them from their punishment and destroy Satan and his rule on earth. • Gods love is shown for us throughout creation but his mercy and grace is shown after man rebelled against Him.

  14. God’s curse on the woman • Read Genesis 3:16 • To the woman he said, "I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you." • Woman would suffer pain during child birth • Her husband would have authority over her • Her desire would be subject to her husbands desire • Husbands please read Ephesians 5:25

  15. God’s curse on Man • Read Genesis 3:17-19 • 17 To Adam he said, "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, 'You must not eat of it,' "Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return." • The ground would now be hard to manage • Man will have to work hard to provide for his needs • Man will ultimately have a physical death

  16. Adam names Eve • Read Genesis 3:20 • Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living. • Adam names Eve the mother of all living, a personal name that defines her destiny • He believed life would continue in spite of God's curse. This was an act of faith and an expression of hope. He believed God's promise that she would bear children. • His wife's first name, "woman" (2:23), looked back on her origin, whereas her second name, "Eve," anticipated her destiny. • We are all descendents of Adam and Eve

  17. Check for Understanding • What was the curse on the serpent • What was the promise? • What was the curse on the woman? • What was the curse on the man? • Why will all people eventually die?

  18. From God’s Point of View • Did God have the right to punish Adam and Eve anyway he wanted to? • How does God deal with your disobedience? • How did God show grace toward Adam and Eve? How does He show grace towards you? • Is God the same today as he was back then?

  19. Conclusion • Adam and Eve deserved to die for their disobedience • God showed love, mercy and grace • God promised a deliverer to save mankind • God always keeps his promises • Man, woman and all of creation were all changed as a result of Adam and Eve’s sin and we live with those consequences today.
