  2. Understanding Arguments of Definition • Open your book to page 218. Read the two paragraphs under this heading • Should the term “refugees” have been used to define those who lost their homes in Hurricane Katrina?

  3. Not Just Words • Look at the images on page 220 & 221. Share with an elbow partner the definitions of “patriotism” each word suggests.

  4. “under construction” • Many social, political and scientific definitions are reargued and reshaped for the time period • Read p. 222 beginning at the third paragraph “Attempts to redefine…” to the end of the section

  5. I Disagree! • Yes, you can disagree with a dictionary definition • Or they can be starting points to lead you to a definition

  6. Kinds of Definitions • Formal Definitions: • From dictionaries • Kinds of Formal Definition Questions: • Ex: Is tobacco a drug or a crop? • Ex: Is hate speech protected by the First Amendment? • Turn to page 225. Look at the visual and answer the question.

Kinds of Definitions • Operational Definition: identifies an object or idea not in terms of what it is but what it does (by the operations that create it) • The operational definition of a peanut butter sandwich might be simply "the result of putting peanut butter on a slice of bread with a butter knife and laying a second equally sized slice of bread on top

  8. Kinds of Definitions • Operational Definitions • Questions related to them: • Is a volunteer who is paid still a volunteer? • Was the act really sexual harassment if the accused believed the interest was mutual?

  9. Kinds of Definitions • Definitions by Example: define a class by listing its members • Ex: • One might define “planets” by listing all nine major bodies in orbit around the sun

  10. Kinds of Definitions • Examples of questions related to example: • Are comic books, now sometimes called graphic novels, literature? • Does Washington, D. C. deserve the status of a state?

  11. Kinds of Definitions • Read and take notes on pages 228-233 • Read ”Respond” p. 240 #3 • Read “Pink Think” p. 246-49 and answer Respond p. 240 #3
