  10. Integration (1) The strategy uses the European Council on Refugees and Exiles definition of integration: “A long-term two-way process of change, that relates both to the conditions for and the actual participation of refugees in all aspects of life of the country of durable asylum as well as to refugees’ own sense of belonging and membership of European societies. The objective of integration programmes and policies should be the establishment of a mutual and responsible relationship between individual refugees, civil society and host states which promotes equality, self-determination and sustainable self-sufficiency for refugees and acceptance and positive action in favour of refugees by European governments and societies” (Report of the Third European Conference on the Integration of Refugees, Brussels, 1999, ECRE)

  11. Integration (2) What Does Integration Mean To You? “Mixing with others” “Inclusion, fitting in and adapting” “It means being part of the community or society I am living in, in all respect doing things like a normal person and not being treated differently because of my status” “It means when I say ‘we’, I mean those who live in the UK” “To be active, work, pay tax, learn English and many other things” “Fitting in to society or the community I live in” “Integration means to me to feel a part of society” “To belong in this country” “Knowing the society I have come to live with.
