  1. Ectopic Pregnancy By: Sasha L., Khadeija D., & Raychele W.

  2. Causes • In an ectopic pregnancy , the fertilized egg attaches (or implants) someplace other than the uterus, most often in the fallopian tube. It can be caused by: • Smoking. • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). • Endometriosis, which can cause scar tissue in or around the fallopian tubes. • Being exposed to the chemical DES before you were born. • Some medical treatments can increase your risk of ectopic pregnancy. These include: • Surgery on the fallopian tubes or in the pelvic area. • Fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization.

  3. Symptoms • Light vaginal bleeding. • Nausea and vomiting. • Lower abdominal pain. • Sharp abdominal cramps. • Pain on one side of your body. • Dizziness or weakness. • Pain in your shoulder, neck, or rectum. • If the fallopian tube ruptures, the pain and bleeding could be severe enough to cause fainting.

  4. Prevention • You can't prevent an ectopic pregnancy, but you can decrease certain risk factorssuch as: • limit your number of sexual partners • use a condom when you have sex to help prevent sexually transmitted infections • reduce the risk of pelvic inflammatory diseases.

  5. Treatment • You would need emergency medical help if the area of the ectopic pregnancy breaks open (ruptures). Rupture can lead to bleeding and shock, an emergency condition. Treatment for shock may include: • Blood transfusion • Fluids given through a vein • Keeping warm • Oxygen • Raising the legs

  6. Cures • There are no cures.
