  2. Dates • The Vietnam war lasted from 1955 to 1975 • It was started on the first of November in 1955 and ended on April 30th.

  3. Places • The Vietnam war was fought in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. • It was fought between North and South Vietnam, however, both sides had powerful allies.

  4. Sides • North Vietnam relied on its communist allies, while South Vietnam supported the US and other Anti-communist nations. • The Vietcong, a communist radical force in Vietnam fought against the US and other nations defending South Vietnam, while North Vietnam fought a more standard war with large units.(tanks, aircraft)

  5. US involvement • The USA involved themselves in this conflict for a number of reasons. • They believed it was a way of containing communism from spreading into other countries, • It was a way to prove their militaristic force to the world.

  6. Casualties • There were many casualties in the Vietnam Conflict, where estimates range from less than one million, to more than three million Vietnamese civilians and servicemen were killed. • From 200,000 to 300,000 Cambodian civilians were killed as well • Anywhere between 20,000 to 200,000 Laotian civilians were killed.

  7. US Casualties and Operations • It is believed that during the Vietnam conflict, 58,224 servicemen died, this includes paramilitary, regional and popular forces as well. • The US used air superiority and firepower to conduct search and destroy missions to eliminate hostile forces. • The US used materials such as napalm and agent orange to subdue attackers.

  8. Result • On April 30, 1975, North Vietnam secured the South Vietnam capitol of Saigon. • This ended the war between the two countries and unified them into standard Vietnam, which stands today.
