  3. Summary A shortened or condensed version of something - a text, a conversation, an event, etc. The purpose is to share the main ideas. Summaries keep the same tone as the original - They do not contain opinion. No formal conclusion is required.

  7. Making a summary Step 1: Do a quick check of the original passage. • Look at: - title - subtitle(s) (if there are any) - first and last paragraphs - First and last sentences in each paragraph. - anything in bold or italics.

  9. Making a summary Step 2: Read the entire passage. • You may need to read it several times (that’s OK). • Do not slow down as you read. • Mark (underline, circle, etc.) the main pointsand key supporting details.

  10. Making a summary Step 3: Re-read the important parts. • Re-read the main points and key supporting details that you marked previously. • Scan for any key points you missed.

  13. Making a summary Step 5: Write the summary. • Write the summary from your notes. • Do notlook at the original while you are writing. Remember: you want to use your own words.

  17. Summary & Response Assignment • Over the semester, you will do 2 “Summary & Response” assignments. Assignment: - There will be a short reading. Read it and make a summary. - There will be 3 questions related to the reading. Follow the instructions and answer 2 questions.

Summary & Response Assignment Evaluation: For the first assignment, I will be looking for: - Statement of main ideas. - Identification of the most important details. - YOUR OWN WORDS - Maintaining of the original’s meaning. You will receive a score for the responses as well, but these are mostly for further practice.

  19. Summary & Response Assignment Deadline: March 27 (11:59 p.m.) Submit to: kachomework@gmail.com File name: NAME_SUMMARY 1 i.e.,) jinsukim_summary 1 • Use MS Word. • Use 12-point Times New Roman or Serif font.

  20. ALSO Start researching two (2) countries that you are interested in. You may choose any countries except: - South or North Korea - Japan - China - U.S.A. Make notes of some similarities and differences between the two countries you have chosen.
