What you will be able to do after the activity is over • What will you be able to do?: You will be able to explain some of the Code of Hammurabi and how this law was implemented/used in Babylonia. • What idea, topic, or subject is important for you to learn and understand so that you can do this?: You will learn some of the law within the Code of Hammurabi and how subjects/people might have been judged during the ancient Babylonian empire. • What you will do to show that you know this?: You will show what you know by reading and answering discussion questions about the ancient court cases, judge nine of them, then answer comprehension questions about Hammurabi's Code as it relates to today.

  3. How to Set up for the Activity in your Notebook • Please turn to page #9 of your notebook. Using the whole page, Make 4 equal size columns with 10 rows. • I will show you an example on the next slide. • first at the top of the page in the large unlined white space please write the following title- Judging Babylonian Court Cases. • Underneath it write down the following words: • Civic Duty, Harsh Punishment. Hierarchy, Honesty • Once you are done, please wait to see how to set up your chart.

  4. Your Assignment: • You will be working as a table to complete this assignment. • Each of the tables will have one of the court cases that you and your group will be evaluating. • Each table will also have a copy of “The Laws of the Code of Hammurabi” • Your team will get 5 minutes at each station to read, assess, and judge the each case. • Once you have rotated back to your original table, we will review all the cases. • The final assessment for this activity will be a short set of comprehension questions to check for mastery.

  5. Comprehension Questions:Please answer these questions on the of page 10 • a. What did you find most interesting about each case?  • b. Which laws do you believe were fair? Unfair? • c. Which laws from the Code of Hammurabi are similar to laws we have today?  • d. Which laws are different from laws we have today? • e. Which Babylonian values do you think are similar to American values? Which values are different?  • f. How would you feel about living in a community that used the laws from the Code of Hammurabi?
