  2. Thesis Statement • Use an Occasion Position to start your Thesis • By exploring the Louisiana Purchase, • Tie the two together • Lewis and Clark • introduced the west as a place for Americans to pursue their dreams.

  3. Research Questions • Use your research questions to set up parts of your paper. Turn the questions into short statements that will become your “yellows” and “reds” later in your paper. • How did Lewis and Clark shape the character of Americans? = thesis • What instructions did President Jefferson give them? = First subtopic Example: President Jefferson gave Lewis and Clark a whole list of things he wanted them to accomplish with their journey.

As a Result of Lewis and Clark’s expedition, people in the East flooded west to find their individual success.
