  1. Homecoming Zechariah 1-2

  2. Zechariah’s Context • Now Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the prophet, a descendant of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, who was over them. …And the prophets of God were with them, helping them. …So the elders of the Jews continued to build and prosper under the preaching of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah a descendant of Iddo (Ezra 5.1, 2b; 6.14a).

  3. Learning from the Mistakes of others • “Do not be like your forefathers, to whom the earlier prophets proclaimed: This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘Turn from your evil ways and your evil practices.’ But they would not listen or pay attention to me, declares the LORD” (1.4). • “This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘Return to me,’ declares the LORD Almighty, ‘and I will return to you,’ says the LORD Almighty”

  4. The Reality of Return • “‘Shout and be glad, O Daughter or Zion. For I am coming, and I will live among you,’ declares the LORD” (2.10). • “The LORD your God is with you…he will rejoice over you with singing” (Zeph 3.14)

  5. The Reality of Return • “‘And I myself will be a wall of fire around it,’ declares the LORD, ‘and I will be its glory within’” (2.5)

  6. The Reality of Return • “‘And I myself will be a wall of fire around it,’ declares the LORD, ‘and I will be its glory within’” (2.5) • “the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left” (Ex 14.22 & 29) • “By the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up. The surging waters stood firm like a wall; the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea” (Ex 15.8)

  7. The Reality of Return • “‘And I myself will be a wall of fire around it,’ declares the LORD, ‘and I will be its glory within’” (2.5) • “‘The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ says the LORD Almighty” (2.9a).

  8. Fire & Glory • When Solomon finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the LORD filled the temple. The priests could not enter the temple of the LORD because the glory of the LORD filled it. When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the LORD above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the LORD, saying, ‘He is good; his love endures forever’ (2 Ch 7.1-3 ; cf. Ex 24.17; Deut 5.24; Isa 4.5).

  9. Homecoming • ‘Return to me,’ declares the LORD Almighty, ‘and I will return to you,’ says the LORD Almighty” (Zech 1.3) • “Come near to God and he will come near to you” (James 4.8a) • “Remain in me, and I will remain in you” (John 15.4a) • “I will live among you” (Zech 2.10, 11)

  10. “Abide in me, and I will abide in you” (John 15.4) • ‘I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. ...No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned (John 15.1-2, 4b-6).
