  2. Spanish Colonization • The first sighting of Spanish colonization was 24 October 1492. • Columbus on his first voyage sailed south of North America he explored Cuba. • 1511, Diego Cuéllar set out to make the first Cuban Colony.

  3. Relations Between Cuba and The United States • Cuban Democracy Act 1962 (Cuban Embargo). • Helms-Burton Act 1996, restricted the US from doing business with Cuba. • Cuba holds human rights violations and state sponsored terrorism designation against US. • The US holds $6 billion worth of financial claims against Cuba.

  4. Cuban Democracy Act (Cuban Embargo) • Came into law in 1992. • Had the purpose of maintaining greater respect towards human rights. • Restricted US and Cuba from doing business. • Caused trouble between Cuba and the US.

  5. Geography and Political Importance • The island is slightly smaller than Pennsylvania. • The Climate is tropical. • Largest Country in the Caribbean. • Is a Communist State Government. • Contains 14 provinces.

  6. Cuban Missile Crisis • Started October 15 1960. • 13 day struggle against the US and Cuba. • Closest the Cold War came to Nuclear Warfare. • Cuba was blockade by the US for building nuclear missiles. • Ended with the US and Cuba dismantling missiles. • Established the Moscow-Washington landline.
