  2. Blood:Blood is a complex mixture of a reddish fluid that circulates inside the cardio-vascular system. • Total volume of blood is ~5.5 liters • Blood has many functions such as • nutritional, respiration, protection, excretion • and regulator.

  3. Haematocrit ValuePacked Cell Volume (PCV) • Definition: It is the volume percentage (%) of red blood cells in blood. • Normal values: Adult male: 42-52 % Adult female: 37-47 % N.B: The number of erythrocytes in the blood must be high enough to carry sufficient O2 to the peripheral tissues, and yet not so great as to adversely increase the blood's viscosity.

  4. Estimation Of Haematocrit Value

  5. Abnormal variations in HV • lower than normal hematocrit value: • Anemia(decreased number of red blood cells). • Overhydration (increased plasma volume).

  6. 2. higher than normal hematocrit: • Polycythemia (RBCs are produced in great numbers, Hct values may be as high as 80%). • Dehydration (decreased plasma volume).
