  3. 2003-04 Work Programme • IST Call 3 (complementing partnerships) • Indicative Budget: 70 M€ • Second Joint Call between thematic priorities 2 and 3 • Indicative Budget: 180 M€ • FET Proactive Initiatives • Indicative Budget: 80 M€ Call opening 22 May closing 22 September 2004 @ 1700 Brussels time

  4. Complementing Partnerships • Integrating R&D in Enlarged Europe plus Associated Candidate Countries: Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey. • Improving partnerships with SME’s • Increase Cooperation with target 3rd countries (INCO) • Progress towards ERA Proposal must complement a running FP6 project (as of Sep ’04)

  5. This is not Europe any more

  6. This is now Europe Latvia Lithuania Estonia Poland Czech republic Slovakia Slovenia Cyprus Malta Iceland Norway Liechtenstein Switzerland Israel Romania Bulgaria Turkey

  7. FET Proactive Initiatives Quantum Information Processing IP Emerging Nanoelectronics IP, NoE Global Computing IP, NoE Bio-inspired Intelligent Information Systems (New) IP, NoE for FET proactive initiatives proposers are encouraged to submit pre proposals deadline 1 July, feed back in 2 weeks

  8. Quantum Information Processing • objective: basic research aimed at realisinga fully functional multi-qubit system • few qubit applications • simulation of quantum systems • integrate theory/experiments/algorithms • long-term rationale: build the general purpose quantum computer

  9. Emerging Nanoelectronics • objective: nanoelectronics beyond 10nm, non-CMOS • hybrid CMOS-molecular, • nanowires - nanotubes • single-molecule electronics • rationale: • non-CMOS electronics for integration into CMOS and later for independent technology • new functions, low cost, manufacturing, self-organisation • constituencies: electronics, physics, chemistry, (biology)

  10. Preparing for FP7: directions • Types of research • Curiosity-driven research • Basic Research • Industry-driven research • Policy-driven research • Mechanisms: • Individual grants • Collaborative research: bottom-up or following “roadmaps” • Infrastructure, Human Resources • Coordination (Art. 169, etc.) • Total budget: expect substantial increase • European Parliament: 30 B€ (currently 17 B€)

  11. Preparing for FP7:Actions in 2004 • Workshops organised by IST/FET, ISTAG • Commission Green Paper – summer ‘04 • Your input and support are welcome … and needed!
