  1. Bell-ringer: • What does CCSS stand for? • What does PARCC stand for? • What is the Teacher Toolbox?

  2. Swimming through the Common core 2013-2014 School year

  3. Objectives: • I will be able to locate and unpack CCSS resources. • I will be able to develop a plan of implementation of the CCSS in my classroom.

  4. What is Common core? CCSS are a consistent and clear understanding of what students are to learn. All students are now on the same level playing field. 45 states have adopted these new standards.

  5. What Content areas are effected? You can fish for the standards here: Math and ELA will follow the CCSS. http://www.corestandards.org/ Science and Social Studies will incorporate certain CCSS into their existing curriculum.

  6. Reading the standards: ELA

  7. Let’s surf the EAC! East Australian Current Man! • Numbers 1-5 jump on and surf the EAC with Crush!

  8. Reading the standards: ELA

  9. Reading the standards: Math

  10. Reading the standards: Math Cluster Domain • The Number System 7.NS • Apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers. • Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram. • Describe situations in which opposite quantities combine to make 0. For example, a hydrogen atom has 0 charge because its two constituents are oppositely charged. • 2. Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division and of fractions to multiply and divide rational numbers. • Understand that multiplication is extended from fractions to rational numbers by requiring that operations continue to satisfy the properties of operations, particularly the distributive property, leading to products such as (–1)(–1) = 1 and the rules for multiplying signed numbers. Interpret products of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts. • 3. Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving the four operations with rational numbers. • Computations with rational numbers extend the rules for manipulating fractions to complex fractions.

  11. Let’s surf the EAC! East Australian Current Man! • Numbers 6-10 jump on and surf the EAC with Crush!

  12. Reading and Writing the Standards • Now let’s try this on our own! • Use the worksheet provided to help you read and write the standards. • Open the link for the ELA CCSS and complete the chart.

  13. CCSS MAIN FOCUS • Math shifts: • Focus skills and standards • Coherence-think and link • Rigor-conceptual understanding and fluency • Application The Math and ELA standards are focusing on rigorous shifts. • ELA shifts: • Building knowledge through content rich nonfiction • Evidence from text • Complex Text and Academic Language

  14. Unpacking the standardsIt’s all about the nouns and verbs

  17. Exploring the Deep Sea • After seeing what the Teacher Toolbox has to offer, write down three things that you will use when planning your lessons, activities, or year. • How or why are they important? 23. What’s your next steps? • I hope that some light bulbs came on for you today and that you have a better understanding of CCSS. • What steps are you going to take now to help implement CCSS in your classroom? • List three things that you are going to do to help implement CCSS in your classroom.
