  1. Global Revolutions #1: Russia What is a revolution? Has the internet (Facebook, Google, Youtube, Twitter, etc.) caused a revolution? Explain. Why might people revolt or rebel against their country? Give 2-3 reasons. Remember – Copy what is in BLACK only. If it is in any other color – just follow the directions!

  2. Russia • Ruled by czars: absolute monarchy • Czar Alexander III (3rd): late 1800s • Stopped reforms started by dad (dad freed serfs – similar to slaves) • Returned autocracy ( ) to country

  3. Secret Police: plainclothesmen who watch your every move • Teachers reported on students • Exiled all opposition to Siberia • Pogroms: systematic targeting of Jews • Couldn’t own land, lived in separate neighborhoods • Violence agst them

  4. Czar Nicolas II (1894-1917) • Continues dad’s rules but he’s weaker (How did ppl tell?) • Increases industrialization • Builds Trans-Siberian Railroad • Increases factories which increases problems for workers – bad working & living conditions

  5. People begin to get angry • Russo-Japanese War: both wanted to control Manchuria (part of China) – Russia loses! PPL = MAD! (like the Patriots fans today!)

  6. 2. Bloody Sunday: 1/22/1905 • 200,000 workers protest at Winter Palace demanding better working conditions, more freedom & elected government • Czar isn’t home, BUT his army is – they fire on the crowd killing b/w 500-1000 ppl Sound familiar?

  8. More strikes begin as act of protest • To calm the ppl, Czar calls for an elected legislature (group that makes laws) called the Duma • Czar dissolved it w/in a few weeks

  10. From a Civil Rights Protestor: “…we were still taking lessons in nonviolence. How to duck, how to dodge, how to lay on the ground and go limp. How to cover your head up if you were being beaten. And how not to strike back, which is the biggest lesson of all because, Cleo and I, we were quite violent as kids, we fought like every other kid did, … and the concept of being nonviolent and not hitting back when somebody hit you was a very difficult and most foreign concept to us.”
