  2. Excretory VS. Urinary • Elimination of metabolic waste • skin (sweat glands) • lungs (CO2 byebye) • Liver • hemoglobin molecule from RBC bile • Ammonia  urea • Kidney (urinary system)

  3. So… what does the urinary system do? • Cleaning the blood (metabolic wastes) • Elimination of nitrogenous wastes • Excess solutes (ionic concentration) • Excess water (osmoregulation)

  4. #1: Nitrogenous wastes • Nitrogen-containing molecules • Ammonia (NH3) • Highly toxic & soluble in water. • From cells breakdown of old proteins • Broken down ammonia liver ureakidney • Remains of drug

  5. #2: Ionic concentration#3: Osmoregulation • Minerals serve as cofactors • Too much is problem • Na+ (salt), K+, Mg++, etc. • Water level in body • +Water= - ionic con. / -Water= +ionic con.

  6. HOW does my pee form? • Filtration • Urea, water, glucose, and other materials are filtered out of the blood. • Reabsorption • Most fluid and some solutes are selectively reabsorbed from the filtrate. • Excretion • Urine w/nitrogenous wastes (urea and uric acid) byebye!

  7. Keep my body BALANCED! • Fluid balance • the volume of water • Mineral balance • the concentration of many ions • Acid-base balance • the concentration of H+ and OH (pH level!!!!!!!!!) • Calcium balance • Elimination of nitrogenous wastes from cellular metabolism

  8. WOW! Factsssss :P • 1.3 million nephrons • 2 kidneys =1100 ~ 2000 L of blood/day =volume of a car! • 800 ml~ 2000ml of urine a day • Once every 4 min. entire 5.6L of blood pass kidney!
