At that rate, they usually burn out by age 5, at which time they are put to death.About 1 million breeder dogs are confined in puppy mills throughout the country.

  3. Recently, 10 Chinese Cresteds were rescued from a puppy mill in Texas and safely delivered to the St. Tammany Humane Society.

  4. They were safe. But anxious and frightened.

  5. Terrie (local rescuer), Candice, and Korey (STHS vet techs) slowly bring the dogs in to be examined and vetted.

  6. Dr. Estelle Felarise cautiously examines pup number one. Though she is scared and trembling, she shows no signs of aggression.

  7. The dogs suffer from weak muscles and bones, along with joint problems that are common with inbreeding and a result of being crated for most of their life.

  8. Frances, along with the others, is given her vaccinations.

  9. This is Julia; she does NOT like needles!

  10. Terrie has a little fun with Mr. Grover! OK OK….I give up!

  11. Dr. Felarise is thorough in her examinations. Many of the dogs have eye issues as well.

  12. Garfield: How can you not love this guy?

  13. All dogs were heartworm negative!

  14. Some of the pups are young, and their teeth still in good condition.

  15. …..but many were in sore need of major dental work.

  16. Most of these needy pups are now in foster homes, where they can receive the love and attention that they sorely need until they can find a forever home.

  17. But we still need to cover the extra costs of the additional medical care and attention that these dogs require. If you are able to donate to their cause, or if you are interested in becoming the forever family for one of these blossoming souls, please contact us at 985-892-7387.

  18. To make a donation you can do so via our website (www.sthumane.org) and simply type “Chinese Cresteds” in the donations detail box, or mail to:St. Tammany Humane SocietyChinese Crested Fund20384 Harrison Ave Covington, LA 70433
