  2. Contest Overview • Date: Thursday, June 14th • Time: 12:30 pm • Location: Texas Tech University – Human Sciences Building • INVITATIONAL CONTEST!

  3. Participation • Open to intermediates and seniors • Individual and team entries accepted! • Teams: • 3-4 youth within same age division from same county • Individuals: • Will be randomly grouped with other individuals to form a team for presentation portion of contest

  4. Contest Format – Part 1 • Judging/placing of 8 classes – Individually • Set up similar to CDM contest • Intermediates & Seniors will judge same classes • 7 minutes per class • Universal Form A Scantron • Each class worth 50 points

  5. Contest Format – Part 2 • Each team presented with a scenario • 10minutes to evaluate it, decide on a solution and prepare a presentation • 5 minutes to give presentation on solution to problem/scenario • 2 additional minutes for Q&A with judges • Topic will tie back to one of class topics • Presentation worth 50 points

  6. Classes for 2012 • Nutrition • Passenger safety/Teen driving safety • Sun safety • Sports nutrition • Altering recipes • Food safety • ATV safety • Mystery class

  7. Sample Class – Passenger Safety • Shelly has a 6 year old girl, Lexie. Lexie is 62 lbs and needs a new car seat. Please help Shelly find the best seat.

  9. Sample Team Scenario • Substance Abuse • Carey’s dad has been smoking for 25 years – since he was 18 years old. He is ready to quit and wants to be successful at his first attempt. What would a successful quit plan look like for Carey’s dad?

  10. Sample Team ScenarioAltering Recipes • Kyle is going to make some banana bread but wants to make it healthier by increasing the nutritional value and cutting back on fat and sugar content. How can this recipe be altered? • 1 cup sugar • 8 Tbsp unsalted butter, room temperature • 2 large eggs • 3 ripe bananas • 1 Tbsp milk • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 1 tsp baking soda • 1 tsp salt

  11. Scoring Summary* *Teams of four members will have the lowest team member’s scores dropped. For teams of three, all team members’ scores will be used in tabulation. **Each team member will receive the same score given for the team presentation.

  15. Contest Schedule* *Schedule may be adjusted based upon the number of teams registered to compete in the invitational contest.

Helping Youth Prepare… • Study resources • Practice classes and presentation scenarios • Avoid creating scenarios with only yes/no options • Introduce to Universal Form A Scantron • Talk through reasons of class placing • Practice presentations • Pre-assign parts among team members • Have 4-H members develop classes and presentation scenarios
