  3. Almost everything I tell you …. • Can be found on the program web page on MxCC web site under Continuing Education • http://mxcc.edu/ce/snap/. • AND the class schedules are on the MxCC Continuing Education web pages • http://mxcc.edu/ce/courses/.

  4. COMPUTER USE AND EMAIL • All communication from me, MxCC, and employers you apply to will be by email • No phone calls or texts • Maintain and check daily email • Learn computer basics – look into getting an inexpensive tablet. Required skills in the job market !

  5. Recent basic job description • Experience & Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook email) • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills with high degree of initiative (no standing around or texting) • Strong verbal and written skills, attention to details • Work effectively as team player and individual • Ability to multi-task and problem solve

  6. SNAP E & T Program • “Scholarship” program with US FDA $ to DSS • DSS MxCC for career courses • Finish courses = make good $ • Raise overall quality of life for a family • DSS expects you to get a job after finishing course. Checks with Dept. of Labor by SSN (decisions on benefits)

  7. Why this program ? • Show responsibility & good work habits • Practice home/time/work management • Gain new skills • Improve computer and problem solving skills • Understand personal strengths & weaknesses • Develop a career reference • First step maybe to a college degree

Career readiness… • Must invest time in this • Resumes, practice interviews, job searches, basic computer classes, special speakers • Russell Library Career Services has them all free • Meriden PL has some • Computers to use. • CAREER READINESS handout • Get general career skills not covered in classes • Know basic computer skills (MS Office, EMAIL, web search etc.)

  11. Average Yearly Income – March 2018 • Security Guards = $15.00/hour but depends on the employer • Cert. Nursing Asst. = $24,000 to $32,000/year (shift $ differences) • Phlebotomy = $31,000 to $35,000 annually start • Vet Assistants = $17.89 /hr. mean wage • Human Services = $19.56/ hr. mean wages

  12. Application • Active email address and read it daily • I will email questions – I work part time • US Citizen (picture ID & Soc. Sec No.) • SNAP benefit entire course • Can perform physical requirements of the training (lifting, standing)

  13. Program Requirements • Not receive TANF (cash) • GED/high school diploma or higher • Pass placement tests Math and English at HS level – info sheet on back table to schedule. Mandatory for Human Services and Pharm Tech • See program web page for appointment directions • Exempt from testing if passed college level Math/English courses (show transcript)

  14. Requirements • Will not enroll you in training programs if cannot be legally employed.No felonies or failed urine drug screen. We check criminal database on background check. • Employers do not usually want to see any convictions (esp. healthcare) • Commitment 10 to 12 weeks – think about transportation & childcare. Juggle tests, classes, clinical sites for health care classes.

Nursing Asst. – 2 or more sections/times • PCT – need active CNA license/working now • Human Services Asst. – Middletown and Meriden classes (pass Accuplacer English) • Security Guard Certification – One Saturday class all day • Veterinary Asst. – one class eves. and clinical section • Phlebotomy Tech – mornings and clinicals • Pharmacy Tech – evening and pass Math placement

  16. Security Guard class information • After the 8 hour class – must go to CT State Police to do background checks, fingerprinting, etc. • If all is well – get your Security Guard “card” • We give you a voucher for this and the State Police bill us • Included in the cost of your class

  21. Not ready for placement testing ?Resources • Middletown & Meriden Adult Ed packages with MxCC (no charge) • Take Fast Track Math and English here any semester (see online class schedule or handout) • Retake placement tests and reapply to a course • Info on back table

  22. Personal information - • If accepted or not – keep applications for period of time • In locked drawers according to federal law for records that contain personal ID info (SSN, etc.) • Only 2 people have access at MxCC
