  1. Remote sensing approaches to spatial and temporal dynamics of defensive agriculture in the greater ecosystem of Tarangire National Park, Tanzania. Big map wildlife agriculture Michael W. Binford*, Terry McCabe, Paul Leslie, Abe Goldman

  2. Problem • “Success” of parks reviewed • Tanzanian case • Stringent conservation • Erratic policies about conservation and co-existence around pakrs • History of unpleasant removals • Response of locals • Community conservation areas • Rise of agriculture evident • Research question: how much land and where has been converted to cultivated agriculture in the Simanjaro Plain

  3. Study Area • Big map • Climate/vegetation/animals/people • History of migration • SW cut off • Literature on Simanjaro plain • Time line of conservation policy changes.

  4. Methods • Landsat/ASTER • Time: 1984 - 2006 • Visual identification of agriculture • Verification by training samples (Alicia Davis)

  5. Identifying Agriculture TM5 path 169 row 63 17 February 1993 5,4,3 color composite

  6. Results • Maps of ag areas 1984-2006 • Tables of changing area • Analysis of migration pathways (known?)

  7. Discussion • Although the total area of new agricultural fields is not a major area in the plains, their locations may affect the migratory habits of several species of wildlife.
