  2. Session Outcomes: • By the end of this session we should be able to: • Explain the main roles of Sport England, NGB’s, Youth Sport Trust and Dame Kelly Holmes organisations. • Describe 2 examples from each organisation and relate how they affect participation in physical activity.

  3. Exam question • Schools can promote and influence participation in physical education. • (a) Describe how teachers can influence participation. (2 marks) • (b) What is meant by ‘extra-curricular’ activities? Include one example in your answer

Answers! • Award up to two marks for a correct response. • - General staff attitude can influence, either positively or negatively. • - The experience of staff in various activities, or a range of activities, can be influential. • - The playing ability and level of staff expertise can be influential. • - Specific staff interest in particular activities will usually lead to a rise in participation in that particular activity. • 8b ) Award up to two marks: one mark for stating what extra curricular activities are and • one further mark for a suitable example. • Extra-curricular: provision made in addition to the normal school timetable, over and • above the statutory provision. • Examples include: •  lunchtime and after school practices •  clubs •  teams •  societies •  trips. • NB Just naming a sport/ activity without relating it to the above is not acceptable.

  6. How Sport England aims to increase participation Funding • Distributes lottery funding and government funding to help: • County sports partnerships • National governing body work (NGB) • Facility development • Schools • Community sports development

  8. National Governing Bodies How many can you think of? • Aim to increase participation/performance in sport through providing and supporting: • Coaching (qualifications, leadership courses) • Officiating qualifications • Talent development (from grass roots to elite) • Competition

Dame Kelly Holmes Trust Get on Tack • All about personal development • Learning how to become more employable • All about carrying on with life • Hard work & determination • Working as a team, communication 'Get on Track' is a three stage sport and personal development programme where young disadvantaged people are mentored by a team of Olympians, Paralympians, World and Commonwealth champions.

The programme helps the young participants to develop their confidence, self-belief and employability skills.

Dame Kelly Holmes Trust Unlocking Potential • Elite athletes mentor young people to unlock their potential • 14 world class athletes • Young people and mentors spend a lot of time together • All about finding the young persons talent/spark • Programme shows nothing is impossible Unlocking Potential is a programme run by the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust and AQA, to help bring out the best in young people so that they can be the best they can be
