  2. Diversity Committee • How did it all get started? • First Steps • Creation of ECDC in Virginia • Moving Forward.

  3. How did it all get started? • First Minority Summit held at 2004 APA National Conference. • Diversity Summit listserv kept the momentum going.

  4. First Steps • Contact with State Chapter established • Develop a network of interested members at the local level. • Learn from previous efforts.

  5. Contact with State Chapter established • Contacted VAPA President. • Became Co-Director of Tidewater Section of VAPA.

  6. Develop a network of interested members. • Diversity in Planning Networking Breakfasts. • Jan ’05 Hampton • April ’05 Va. Beach • June ’05 Newport News • October ’05 Norfolk • Keep a good database. • Develop and nurture a strong leadership team.

  7. Learn from previous efforts. • Contacted NY ECDC. • - Used NY-Metro ECDC by-laws • as basis. • -Learned from their experience and • successes. • Kept in contact with other interested members outside Virginia.

  8. Creation of ECDC in Virginia • In April of ‘05 VAPA approved the creation of VAPA-ECDC. • In August ‘05 VAPA assigned budget and suggested the submittal of a proposal to CPC for additional funds. • October ’05 APA approved CPC Grant. • ECDC first meeting took place in Nov. of 2005!

  9. Moving Forward… • Two networking breakfasts in ‘06: VCU and HU. Three more are being planned for this calendar year. • ECDC website was launched on Jan ’06. http://www.vaplanning.org/diversity.html • New regular column that focuses on Diversity will appear in VAPA News Brief.

  10. Moving Forward… • On March 30th of ‘06 VAPA-ECDC hosted the first Diversity Summit. • ECDC launched a marketing campaign, using CPC grant funds, to encourage young minorities to choose planning and supervisors to take the necessary steps to diversify their work force.
