  3. DISCLAIMER Today’s presentation includes the opinion of the author and does not necessarily reflect the views of the presenters.

  4. Opening Question Is any library better than no library? NO

  5. Low Standards Is a “library” on a cruise ship that is open 2 hours a day and staffed by a dancer really a library? • Is a building with books in a small town a library? • What is the line between a “book room” and a “library”?

  6. Low Standards “…the ‘standard’ for libraries is the weakest thing you can think of called a library. Everything beyond that is grandiose, and may be unnecessary in the eyes of those who watch budgets.”

  7. Libraries as a Good Thing The idea of having a library is more important than what the library does.

  8. Bigger, Not Better How are libraries like McDonald’s?

  9. Bigger, Not Better “How then do we differ from the local supermarket manager, whose job is to stock merchandise that wil. move off the shelves, and who has no responsibility for nutritional content?” Are libraries responsible for giving a quality product to the people?

  10. Libraries without Librarians What do you call a hospital without a doctor? What do you call a library without a librarian?

  11. Libraries without Librarians Clerks are not librarians, like… Nurses are not doctors, like… Paralegals are not lawyers.

  12. Add more info about his beliefs about what librarians need to do as professionals.

  13. Libraries as Shelter “…we have allowed ourselves to be so trivialized, the library can be seen simply as a handy place to come in out of the rain.”

  14. Libraries as Shelter It is if we simply assumed that we do for anyone what they came to have us do, that any professional decision-making by librarians is really incidental to a changing set of circumstances we do not control.” “Is the library’s role the provision of shelter?

  15. More about Libraries as Shelter “Are public libraries so vulnerable as to be endangered by policies that delineate what are and what are not their appropriate roles in serving children?”

  16. Librarians as Social Workers “…we accept the problems of adult illiteracy or latchkey children without additional support because these problems are there.” Librarianship becomes secondary.
