APPLICATION CHECKLIST • Create an MCPS Careers Profile • Apply to either AP or ASA eligibility pool--resume lists classroom and leadership experiences • Attach evidence of completed coursework—Admin I (AP only) and OAT 1 • Attach evidence of Future Administrators’ Workshop (FAW) or refresher (AP only) • Submit three recommendations • Complete written assessment (AP only) • Interview (AP only)

EXPERIENCE—AP and ASA • Minimum 5 years successful teaching or counseling, PPW, or psychology experience • Minimum 1 year within MCPS • Included in, or in addition to, years of teaching, candidates must have 2 years of: • School-based leadership experience OR • Assistant school administrator experience OR • Central services administrator/instructional specialist experience

  4. EXPERIENCE (continued) • Teacher leadership is not limited to an actual leadership position within the school • Teacher leadership experiences may include, but are not limited to: • Providing professional development to other teachers • Developing curriculum and programs

  5. Administrative Coursework Requirement Must be completed by Jan. 30, 2013 • Administrative and Supervisory Certificate (Admin I)—AP Pool only • Observing and Analyzing Teaching I (OAT 1)—AP and ASA Pool • OAT 1 refresher is provided for those who completed OAT 1 more than three years before application

  6. Future Administrators’ Workshop Requirement (FAW) For the AP Pool only, • If not currently an administrators, complete the full-length FAW before applying to AP Pool • If a current administrator, take a 1-day FAW refresher designed for your needs • Submit certificate showing completion of FAWor the refresher

  7. RECOMMENDATIONS—AP and ASA Pools • Minimum of 3 recommendations from principals/supervisors • At least one recommendation from current, direct supervisor/principal • Recommendation forms will be available on the MCPS website

  8. WRITTEN ASSESSMENT For the AP Pool only, • Required: 1-hour written assessment to be completed at OHRD • Writing prompts include typical AP scenarios • Writing is evaluated on the following: • Following directions • Problem-solving skills • Language, mechanics & tone

  9. WRITTEN ASSESSMENT (CONTINUED) • Minimum score of 20 out of possible 25 points is required • Each written response will be scored by at least two independent scorers. A third scorer may be used if necessary

INTERVIEW—AP Only Once entry requirements are met, qualified candidates will be invited to interview for AP Pool • Panel of principals/directors will conduct interviews • Scoring rubric will be used during interview • Candidates are encouraged to bring a portfolio of work • A satisfactory review from this panel will be the final step in the approval process

QUALIFICATIONS FOR INTERVIEW Candidate has. . . • Applied to AP eligibility pool citing classroom and leadership experiences • Completed Admin I and OAT I Coursework • Completed Future Administrators’ Workshop (FAW) • Has submitted three recommendations—all are recommend candidate for AP Pool • Successful completion of written assessment

TIMEFRAME FOR AP POOL • Application process begins Oct. 29, 2012 • Evidence of coursework completion and submitted recommendations are due by Jan. 30, 2013 • All written assessments must be completed by March 1, 2013 • Interviews will be held March 4-8, 2013 at OHRD at 45 W. Gude Drive • Final List of AP Pool Candidates will be released to principals on March 22, 2013

  13. TIMEFRAME FOR ASA POOL • Application process begins Oct. 29, 2012 • Evidence of OAT I coursework completion and submitted recommendations are due by Jan. 30, 2013 • Final List of ASA Pool Candidates will be released to principals on March 22, 2013

  14. YOU’VE BEEN SELECTED! • If selected into the AP or ASA Eligibility Pool, you will receive written notification from OHRD of acceptance • If selected into the AP or ASA Eligibility Pools, you may: • Apply for advertised vacancies • Receive request-for-interview calls from principals and receive a call from the principal with an offer

  15. YOU’VE BEEN SELECTED! (CONTINUED) • If selected to fill an AP or ASA vacancy, selection must be approved by the deputy superintendent of school support and improvement. • If not selected to fill an AP vacancy, you will remain in the pool for a maximum of three years • If not selected to fill an ASA vacancy, you must apply for the ASA Pool again next year

  16. AP POOL TENURE • Length of Tenure: 3 years • If you are currently in the AP Pool under the previous requirements, you are not required to meet new requirements. • Required to meet new requirements upon renewal

  17. AP POOL RENEWAL Renewal Requirements • After 3 years, all candidates will take 1-year break before reapplying • After 3 years in the AP Pool, OHRD or OSSI will conduct an EXIT interview with exiting candidates to help them identify personal leadership experiences to pursue during 1-year break

  18. AP POOL RENEWAL (continued) Once eligible to reapply, candidates must: • Submit 3 new recommendations • Ensure OAT I certification is updated • Participate in 1-day refresher FAW • Continue to meet standard on all evaluations • Interview with Principal/Director Panel if renewing for first time under the new requirements

  19. IF YOU ARE NOT SELECTED. . . • You will be informedin writing by OHRDas to why you were not selected for the AP or ASA Eligibility Pool • You may reapply the following year

  20. WAYS TO ENHANCE YOUR CANDIDACY FOR AP POOL • If you did not pass the writing assessment, consider taking a writing class • Take FAW, if taken more than three years ago

  21. WAYS TO ENHANCE YOUR CANDIDACY FOR AP AND ASA POOLS • If recommendations are below standard, make sure you ask for references from those who best know your work. • Take OAT I refresher, if taken more than three years ago • Assume as many leadership opportunities as possible in preparation for applying to the pool again.
