  2. Where did the Greeks go if they were sick?  Aims To find out about the cult of Asclepius and the methods of treatment used

  3.  Your task • Read through the information on p.30-31 and answer the ‘Activities’ question on p.30. • What evidence is there that Greek cures worked?

Greek Asclepions Asclepius: god of healing, daughters Panacea & Hygieia Asclepions: in every Greek town by 200BC, with experienced priest-healers Hippocratic influence: healthy remedies, e.g. use of herbs & natural treatments Positive benefits: healthy lifestyle; clean conditions, simple surgery & treatments

  5.  Your task Read about the temple of Asclepius on p.30-1. Imagine you are trying to encourage people to visit the Asclepion at Epidarus. Write a letter to a friend describing your treatment. Include the following: • Description of your problem • Description of the Asclepion • What happened • Who saw you and how you were cured

  6.  Plenary • Who were Asclepius, Panacea & Hygeia? • What evidence is there that Asclepions were influenced by Hippocrates’ ideas? • What evidence is there of ideas continuing as before? Asclepion at Cos

  7.  Extension tasks • Visit the website Greek Medicine. net and find out more about the life of Asclepius & Hygeia. What do the myths of their lives tell us about the Greek’s understanding of medicine? • Design your own Asclepion. If you have time build a model!
