This homework assignment involves analyzing the top international and domestic news stories in one's country, as well as in the U.S. Students will discuss the overlap and differences in news reporting between countries and present their findings to the class. The class will also explore personal news sources preferences and discuss what makes news reporting good or not.

Homework AssignmentWhat’s News? • Look at the news from some source (TV, print media, or Internet) and answer the following questions: • What are the top international stories in your country? • What are the top domestic stories? • What are the top international and domestic stories in the U.S.? • In class we will discuss your findings as well as the following question: • What overlap is (or isn’t) there in the above? What does this say about the way news is reported in each country?

Discussion • 2 small groups • Make sure your opinion is heard • Prepare a brief presentation: • The Top Stories, by country • What overlapped? • What was notable but not included somewhere? • What does this say about the way news is reported in general? • What does this say about the way news is reported in each country (please make country-specific comments)?

  4. Presentation • Coin flip to see who goes first • Presentations • Questions – (at least) one from each member of the audience

  5. Wrap-up • Individual work – Summarization: What would you tell your friends? What did this class conclude about News reporting? (2 sentences max) • Full class discussion - Where do you get your news? What is good, what is not?
