  1. September 4, 2013 Agenda: SLO Collect American Colonies Project Review Quads and Unit 1 Questions Mercantilism and the Middle Passage Table of Contents: 20. 13 Colonies Chart 21. Colonial Quads 22. Chapter 1 Review Questions 23. Unit 1 Review 24. Mercantilism and Crackdown 25. Triangular Trade and The Middle Passage 26. The Middle Passage Experience EQ- How did mercantilism change the goals of the colonies?

  2. Mercantilism • It’s all about the Benjamins. • Country’s ultimate goal is to make money from their colonies • Colonies find anyway they can to make money: • New England- fishing, shipbuilding, lumber, livestock • Middle- food, trade/merchants, shipbuilding • Southern- cash crops • Navigation Acts- colonies can’t sell stuff to other countries without going through England first (England • has to make money from it!)

  3. Crackdown on Massachusetts Massachusetts colony wasn’t following the rules and continued to smuggle goods to and from other countries….. England gets mad and King Charles revokes their charter- makes Massachusetts a royal colony under the Kings rule. SO….. • Massachusetts is no longer a “Puritan” colony • Non-Puritans get a say in the gov’t (Half-way Covenant)

  4. Act it out! • Imagine that you are • 1. King Charles • 2. A merchant in Massachusetts who works WITH the King • 3. A smuggler in Massachusetts • 4. A Puritan • Create an improv conversation that might have occurred between these four people.

  5. Triangular Trade and Slavery • Because of MERCANTILISM, a system of worldwide trade develops • Transatlantic Slave Trade aka Triangular Trade

  6. Basic Version Colonies Rum and Goods Africa Sugar and Molasses Enslaved people West Indies Called the MIDDLE PASSAGE

  7. Middle Passage • The voyage that brought kidnapped slaves from Africa to the West Indies and later the 13 colonies • Horrible conditions, beatings, filth, overcrowding, starvation, suicide- 20% did not survive • Between 1492-1863 25-30,000,000 Africans taken
